First of all, Andrew is very humble. No hat games played at this announcement. In fact, Andrew didn't even announce the choice, as it was displayed on the scoreboard. The presser was held right after practice, with Andrew participating until the last play. Gave special recognition to Coaches Tressel and Fickell. He said ever since the Michigan game he knew he'd "die to be Buckeye." He did say he wished he could attend each of his final schools for one semester. Brewster deserves major props for recruiting Andrew..."out of the blue Michael Brewster from Florida called me one day" and Andrew admitted that the current recruits had a big impact on his decision. Pryor and Hale are definitely priorities for the recruits in this class.

It's obvious Notre Dame made a late last ditch effort to get him and that they were second. He talked about riding around the ND campus with Weis in his golf cart last weekend and how much he enjoyed that. When asked what stood out about Ohio State, he said quickly...the people, from the fans, to the players, to the coaches. He feels this will be the best recruiting class in the nation, regardless of size and he wanted to tell the people of Columbus that they're coming to win a title. He hopes that Laurinaitis stays for another year so that he can learn from him, just like James learned from Hawk and Carpenter. ND told him he'd play the mike, but OSU has said he can play any of the three and allowed him to be flexible. He's ready for the "NFL like atomosphere" in Columbus (asked by a Pittsburgh television reporter). Tressel definitely made an impression on Mom. VERY glowing remarks from her.

One last thing, this kid smiled the entire time he was giving his interviews, never stopped. Seems truly happy to be a Buckeye!! Just like the rest of Buckeye Nation is happy that Andrew Sweat is a Buckeye!!

Trinity coach Ed Dalton calls senior linebacker Mike Yancich "Tarzan."

Trinity linebacker Andrew Sweat described the long-blond-haired Yancich as a California boy on the exterior with a hint of A.J. Hawk on his interior.

But on an early July morning, the 6-foot-1, 216-pound Yancich was just a teenager eager to start his senior year of high school football and even more anxious to continue his college football career at Penn State.

For Yancich, it's still difficult to fathom that he'll be playing in the Big Ten, in front of more than 100,000 fans on Saturdays. Up until February of this year, he didn't have a single scholarship offer, but then he garnered Division I interest and committed to the Nittany Lions in June, shortly after they offered.

"Maybe (it worked out) because we prayed about this since we were 3," Yancich said of his and Sweat's dreams of playing college football. "It's not going to hit us until we get (to college), like literally hit us, literally like smack us."

Yancich reminisced with Sweat, an Ohio State recruit, about how maybe this was the plan all along. After all, they used to flash the touchdown signal as they crossed home plate after hitting a home run in baseball. They played against each other in grade school, but were reunited in high school. The best friends will be opponents again in college when Penn State plays Ohio State, which is usually the Lions' most anticipated game of the season.

Canon-Mac-Trinity rivalry still hot

When the WPIAL football playoffs begin, Friday's game between Canon-McMillan and Trinity will bear little meaning.

With the exception of potential postseason seeding, there's not much at stake when the Hillers travel to Big Macs Stadium for a non-conference game between two programs looking to impact their respective classifications.

"I'd probably have to say Canon-Mac is our biggest game," senior Michael Yancich said. "I mean half of Washington and probably all of Canon-Mac will be at that game. It's going to be packed and it doesn't get much better than playing in front of all those people."

Yancich is one of three Trinity seniors with a Division I pedigree. He orally committed to play linebacker at Penn State this summer, just weeks after fellow linebacker Andrew Sweat selected Ohio State. Brandon Weaver, who broke his wrist last year, has an offer from Ohio University. And Trinity, like Canon-McMillan, boasts several talented and able-bodied underclassmen.

"Brandon being healthy is going to help us a lot," Sweat said. "He's kind of like me. Off the field, we're both pretty mellow but on the field we play with a mean streak. He's a great player. If he didn't have that setback, people would know about him like they know me and Mike."

Andrew Sweat can offer a perspective well beyond his years -- and he can lay a booming hit on a ball carrier as well.

One of the most heavily recruited players in the state, Sweat is a senior linebacker at Trinity who has made a verbal commitment to Ohio State after considering scholarship offers from some of college football's heavy hitters.

Sweat's football merits are well documented, but some might not know much about the young man's existence when he takes off those pads.

He is ranked No. 7 in his class.

He is tremendously well spoken, each word exiting his mouth only after a careful thought.

And, he has his future mapped out as he's already decided -- if, of course, that NFL career does not pan out -- to go to law school and, afterward, take over his father's law firm.

"So many people are really great football players and play in college and that sort of thing," Sweat said. "But a lot of them lose sight of everything and where their future is going to take them. So many of them think they are going to play in the NFL and there just aren't that many spots, so that is why I look at things the way I do.

"My next step in life, after college football, probably isn't going to be the NFL and I realize that."

Penn State has built a well-deserved reputation for being known as "Linebacker U," but the Nittany Lions lost out on a chance to get a guy who could have fit well in that legacy. But what is Penn State's loss is Ohio State's gain, a school which in its own right has turned out a few decent linebackers.

Sweat personifies the Pennsylvania blue-collar perception but also blends it with excellent athletic ability. He is a linebacker prospect who looks the part and plays with a "seek and destroy" attitude, which should make fans in the horseshoe very happy. He will play consistently downhill and is big and physical enough to play through a blocker, but what helps land a prospect like Sweat among the nation's best is that he is more than just a battering ram.

The ESPNU High School All-American is also athletic and fluid enough to slip blocks and quickly change directions and chase down the ball. In a self examination of his own game, Sweat will tell you his strengths are his instincts and his pursuit of the football. Watching him play it is hard to argue, but many great players are hardly satisfied with their strengths and push to get better. Said Sweat: "I need to improve all areas to become the player I want to be."

Washington Sunday: Hillers trying to play up to their high expectations

It's hard to imagine what some of them might be. Trinity was averaging nearly 300 rushing yards per game entering the Chartiers Valley contest and its defense was performing at a high level behind senior linebackers Mike Yancich and Andrew Sweat, who are recruits of Penn State and Ohio State, respectively.

The team has run the ball extremely well with Yancich at tailback and Sweat at fullback behind a senior-dominated offensive line. Center Frank Dobbin, guards Taylor Deep and Eric Stultz, tackles Ed Gray and Ian Killen and tight end J.D. Berry all are experienced players who have provided the foundation for the offense.

Mike Yancich rushed for 200 yards on 26 carries and scored on runs of 36, 36, 6 and 16 yards, as the Hillers (4-2, 2-1) rolled to an easy road victory against the Warriors (0-6, 0-4) in the Big Seven Conference. Trinity also scored on a 34-yard interception return by Brandon Weaver, an 8-yard pass from Andrew Steratore to Graham Cowleson, and an 80-yard run by Andrew Sweat.
