Linebacker ready to tackle Big 10 career and academics, says Skyhawks coach

Hammond linebacker Stone Pinckney, one of the top tacklers in SCISA, has orally committed to play for Northwestern, according to his coach, Erik Kimrey.

“He took a visit there this weekend and came back and talked with his parents about it and it just seemed to be the right place for him,” Kimrey said.

Pinckney, who led the SCISA state champion Skyhawks defense with a school single-season record 161 tackles, chose Northwestern over Louisville and North Carolina. Kimrey said he was not surprised by Pinckney’s decision. The Wildcats aggressively pursued Pinckney, a three-year starter for Hammond.

“It just seemed like a natural fit for Stone, with the school and with the coach,” Kimrey said.

Pinckney has a 3.7 grade point average and plans to pursue a career in broadcasting and communications.

“We’re unbelievably thrilled for him. He’s an outstanding representative of this school,” Kimrey said. “He’s a bright kid with a tremendous future, and we’re excited to see where this path will take him.”

Wanted to commit to Coach Fitzgerald during his in-home but decided to wait until after his official visit. Was receiving interest from the likes of N.C. State, Duke, North Carolina, Louisville and Georgia Tech.
