High School Notebook: Top football players narrowing down lists

Central Catholic's Quentin Williams is in a similar situation as Shanahan, although Williams said he wants to play football and baseball in college. Williams (6-3, 225), a tight end-defensive end, has football scholarship offers from Pitt, Boston College, Stanford, Rutgers and Michigan State, among others. But he also is a standout pitcher-outfielder in baseball and some major-league teams are starting to express interest.

"Almost all of the schools I've talked to have no problem with me playing both," Williams said. "It's kind of shocking how baseball has just sky-rocketed with me. I used to see myself as just a football player who played baseball. Now the two go hand in hand."

"I must say, I like to hit people, but I also like to catch the ball," said Williams, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound senior who plays tight end and outside linebacker.

So, which is it?

"I envision myself as a defensive player," Williams said. "I did that during my freshman and sophomore year before I moved to tight end for my junior year, but I'm not going to try to choose right now."

Williams, whose brother, Nate, is a redshirt freshman linebacker for Northwestern, is intent on giving his college choice careful deliberation, although he's already considering options. He said he likes Rutgers and Boston College for football, both of which he has visited, and he's also eyeing Vanderbilt.

Baseball interest is coming from Kentucky, Ohio and Clemson.

Quentin Williams rarely wastes words. He's the kind of high school football player who isn't boisterous and does not brag, but one who would rather show what he can do on Friday nights . Although short on words, Williams, a 6-foot-4, 235-pound tight end/defensive end at Central Catholic, is long on talent.

"As far as my athleticism and my size, I guess I do kind of take some people by surprise," Williams said. "I think that might have to do with me being quiet, too. I just kind of go about my business."

And going about that business not only yielded 22 catches for 424 yards and six touchdowns last year, but forced scholarship offers to come streaming in. Williams, also a good student and stellar baseball player, has 18 scholarship offers, from everywhere from Oklahoma to Vanderbilt to Iowa to Rutgers, Stanford and Michigan State.

That said, he doesn't feel any pressure to make a decision.

"I'm just kind of laying low with the decision and feeling it all out," Williams said. "I'm not in a big rush to choose and, really, I don't have to be. I'm just going to see what happens."

Pittsburgh Central Catholic was supposed to be down this year as the Vikings have a number of underclassmen starting at key positions. Apparently someone forgot to tell them that as they have raced to a 4-0 record this season.

The Vikings -- and more precisely Sunseri's right arm -- advanced the lead to 14-0 late in the quarter when tight end Quentin Williams reeled in a wide-open pass in the middle and scrammed in from 30 yards.

Western Pennsylvanians provide boost to Pitt's football recruiting

On the district level, Pitt still has an outside shot at Central Catholic tight end-defensive end Quentin Williams. He visited Northwestern this past weekend.

"I'm really down to Northwestern and Stanford, but I might possibly look at Rutgers and Pitt, too," said Williams, who also plans to play baseball in college.

Quentin Williams had his heart in the right place when he made his college decision, but it was more a matter of his projected position than brotherly love.

The first-team all-state selection from Central Catholic made a verbal commitment to Northwestern - where his brother, Nate, will be a redshirt sophomore linebacker - because it offered him a shot to become a playmaker.
