This kid goes to the local school, but honestly I do not remember him standing out at any games which I attended the past two years. Certainly not enough to make me think that he was a Big Ten recruit. Canon-Mac is the same county as Trinity High School which has Ohio State verbal Andrew Sweat and Penn State verbal Mike Yancich.

An underrecruited, unheralded athlete brimming with speed and potential, Matthews managed to catch the eye of a few Division I programs after a highlight package compiled by head coach Guy Montecalvo hit the circuit. Ohio University thought enough of Matthews' talent to list him as its top target at defensive back and slot receiver. Army offered an appointment and other schools soon followed.

Matthews visited the Northwestern campus and quickly realized the suburban Chicago campus was where he wanted to continue his playing career. After returning, the Canon-McMillan speedster commited to Northwestern.

The fastest guy on the team is Jeravin Matthews, a 5-9, 155-pound junior running back/defensive back, who rushed for 329 yards and three touchdowns on 60 carries. His ran a 4.4 in the 40-yard dash on the turf with football shoes at the Metro Index Camp and has run it in 4.2 on the track with spikes.

From the NU site...comments from Jeravin about why he chose Northwestern and quotes from his coach about what kind of athlete he is. Also had offers from Ohio and Army.

Canon-McMillan 56, Greater Latrobe 14: Canon-McMillan had three players rush for over 100 yards as the Big Macs gained 463 yards on the ground in a 56-14 non-conference win over Greater Latrobe.

Jeravin Matthews rushed for 121 yards on just six carries, scoring three touchdowns for Canon-McMillan....

The Canon-McMillan running backs spread the field on opponents and with two star athletes as part of the package, they spread the attention among each other as well.

It is not easy to take attention away from sophomore Mike Hull, who racked up 545 yards (10.3 yards a rush) in non-conference play during the season's first four weeks.

But senior Jeravin Matthews requires just as much attention from opposing defenses.

A Northwestern University recruit, he does it all for the Big Macs, returning kicks, catching passes, playing defense, and, oh yeah, running the ball. He had 249 yards on just 32 carries, a nifty 7.8 yards per carry average, in the Big Macs' first four games.
