Tight end Mason says he will sign with Ole Miss : Football Recruiting : GoVolsXtra.com

Tight end Zaccheus Mason will sign with Ole Miss, the standout from Christ Presbyterian Academy in Nashville told the News Sentinel via text message Sunday.

The 6-foot-5, 250-pounder had been considering Tennessee, having taken an official visit to Knoxville on Jan. 16. Mason visited Ole Miss on Jan. 23.

“I enjoyed Ole Miss a lot more,” Mason said.

Mason was a late addition onto the football recruiting scene. Also a basketball standout, Mason fielded several scholarship offers from smaller schools to play basketball.

Following standout seasons on the football field as a junior and senior, Mason decided to pursue football instead of basketball.

Top tight end Zaccheus Mason picks Ole Miss
ESPNU 150 Zaccheus Mason has committed to Mississippi. The 6-foot-5, 240-pound standout had also been considering Tennessee. Mason also had several offers from smaller schools to play basketball.

He told ESPN affiliate Web site InsideTheGrove.com, "After the visit I just kind of felt like that where I wanted to spend the next four years of my life. I was really excited about what Ole Miss is trying to accomplish and I didn't want to miss out on that."

ESPN's Craig Haubert added, "Ole Miss scored a big sleeper just days before national signing day. The Rebels reached up into Tennessee to land a tight end with an exciting amount of upside in Zaccheus "Z" Mason. The No. 2-rated tight end made his mark in basketball, but has come along as a football player and could develop into a big time weapon for the Ole Miss offense."

"He possesses excellent size and good hands. He also runs well for a big guy. He has taken snaps at quarterback in high school from a wildcat type formation and he is a weapon not only catching the ball but also running with it. Coming off his visit this weekend he jumped on board with Mississippi and could end up being a huge get for this class. All indications point to him giving up basketball to focus on football in college and which should speed up his development as he is still a little raw in some areas."

"Mason is an exciting player, he does have some business to take care of, but this is a big land for Ole Miss as they try and climb their way up the SEC ladder."
