Besides Cretin-Derham Hall 6-foot-7, 295-pound lineman Seantrel Henderson, the Gophers football team is recruiting juniors Beau Allen, a Minnetonka defensive tackle; Jimmy Gjere, an Irondale offensive tackle; and LaMonte Edwards, a Woodbury linebacker.
Gjere is 6-7, 285 pounds and is a defenseman in hockey. Wearing skates, he's nearly 7 feet tall.

This kid is a heck of an athlete for being 6'7". I saw him twice this year and he was the fastest lineman in the trenches both times, despite being the biggest by far.
And I saw him completely clean the clock of Mike Johnson, a 6'8", 285-pound lineman from another school who just signed a LOI to play at Crookston.

I use to think gjere would be the first instate prospect to sign for the 2010 class, but now I'm thinking it will be Edwards. The competition will be fierce from Iowa and Wisconsin for gjere.

Well we can hope for him.
I'm hoping during football season next year I'll get a chance to talk to Gjere about his recruitment. We'll see how the cards fall, but if we could get him and Henderson in the same class, we'd have a sick O-Line until 2014.

Henderson is going to be a battle to the end between UW, Minny, TOSU, and Notre Shame. Its going to be a very interesting battle indeed.

Wad clued Buckeye fans into the interest Ohio State has been showing, and Rivals is now listing an offer from the Bucks.

North spotlight: Irondale's Gjere kind of a big deal on skates
Nothing much about football that we didn't already know (Has received interest from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa and Ohio State) but a cool story on a huge lineman who plays hockey in the winter. He stands near seven feet on skates.

Wow, people were predicting his recruitment would blow up, but this is earlier then most thought I think. Especially for a school as prestigous as OSU.

Great, just what the Gophs need, more competition for Gjere.
They already have enough for Henderson. Man, what would that say about Brewster if he could keep them both home?

Couple of things we know:
Brewster is going to fight for these two until the ink is dry on NLOID '10.
Da U has to be considered the early favorite for both considering they are both in-state prospects and Brewster did a good job in-state last year locking up all but two of the Top 10 he offered (Casey Dehn and Bryce McNeal).
[DISCLAIMER: on the next point, I am not a Minnesota fan so forgive me if I am off on some of this]
Lastly, Minnesota can easily sell early PT...5 seniors graduating, with 5 more graduating after the 2009 season. That will leave 4 seniors on the roster going into 2010, with everyone else likely a redshirt freshman (I imagine Ed Olson, Brooks Michel, Eric Jacques and Josh Campion will all likely redshirt given the depth you guys have going into 2009). So Gjere and Henderson could possibly pencil themselves into the two deep the moment they step on campus.
Lots of positives...

There is going to be a chance for the offensive linemen that Minnesota signs in 2010 to play early, and there could be around 4 of them again. Other than the 4 they signed this year and Matt Carufel who transfered in 2009, the offensive linemen were brought in by the previous regime who looked for smaller linemen with good agility to fit the zone blocking scheme. Brewster has been looking for larger linemen and the two instate guys fit the bill. When the 2010 class arrives this means there will be 5 linemen who fit the mold of what Brewster wants, 2 seniors in Jeff Wills and Matt Carufel, and 3 either redshirt freshmen or sophomores (Jacques was signed as a defensive tackle). That said, this might be a factor for Gjere, but Henderson is probably a lock for the two deep at any school he decides to go to.
