Recruiting Notes: Hazelwood East's Kirksey commits to Minnesota

Hazelwood East defensive end Brandon Kirksey watched last year as teammates Thomas Merriweather and William Anderson went through the recruiting process. Kirksey didn't want to do it the same way.

Merriweather and Anderson, both running backs, were two of the area's top prospects, but they waited to commit until late and eventually saw their scholarship offers and college opportunities decrease.

"Two of our top players got the wrong end of it last year," Kirksey said. "They waited, and then schools took their offers away. … I'm not going to end up like that. I wanted to commit somewhere early."

Eventually, after being recruited by Big Ten and Big 12 Conference schools, Merriweather ended up at Miami (Ohio), and Anderson chose Arkansas State.

So rather than wait too long, Kirksey has committed to Minnesota, though he's still considering some other schools. He said Kansas State, Illinois, Mississippi and Arkansas also offered scholarships. "Minnesota was the school I was waiting on," he said. "They were my top choice."

The 6-foot-2, 255-pound Kirksey was an All-Metro first-team selection last fall after racking up 112 tackles (59 solo), including five tackles for losses, and one sack at defensive tackle.
