MEALER IS LIGHT . . . ON HIS FEET
Basketball helps big Wauseon lineman impress Michigan

By STEVE JUNGA
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

WAUSEON - From the time he was a little boy - if Elliott Mealer could have ever been considered little - the Wauseon senior football standout dreamed of one day becoming an Ohio State Buckeye.

So, when Ohio State's rival - the University of Michigan - first showed recruiting interest in him, Mealer had to rethink his aspirations.

Mealer hopes that Debord and Moeller will remain on the coaching staff but says he will likely remain committed regardless.

Talks about the UM/Miles debacle a bit and says no matter who is hired he is 99.9% sure he will stick with UM. Talks about which assistant coaches he hopes stay at UM.

WTOL-TV Toledo, OH: UPDATED--Two fatalities in Fulton County Christmas Eve crash

Quote:
Charges are pending in a Christmas Eve crash that took two lives. The accident happened at the intersection of State Route 2 and County Road 19 in Fulton County.

Police say 90-year-old H. Edward Johnson of Wauseon slammed into a vehicle driven by 50-year-old David Mealer, also of Wauseon. Investigators on the scene said Johnson ran a stop sign on southbound County Road 19 in his 1991 Buick Skylark and struck the Mealer vehicle, a 1998 Mercedes, which was eastbound on State Route 2. The Mercedes overturned and went off the road, coming to a rest on its top. The accident happened about 9:30 p.m.

Mealer and 17-year-old Hollis Richer of Wauseon were killed. Twenty-two-year-old Brock Mealer is in critical condition.

Also in the vehicle were Shelly Mealer, 47, and Elliott Mealer, 18. The survivors were transported to Fulton County Health Center and St. Vincent's in Toledo. No passengers were wearing seatbelts.

2 are killed, 4 injured in crash on State Rt. 2

PETTISVILLE, Ohio - Two Wauseon residents, one of them a teenager, were killed and four were hurt in a two-vehicle crash Monday night at a State Rt. 2 intersection between Archbold and Wauseon, authorities said.

David Mealer, 50, and Hollis Richer, 17, a family friend, were pronounced dead at the scene of the 9:35 p.m. collision on the German-Clinton township line, troopers at the Ohio Highway Patrol's Toledo post said.

Brock Mealer, 22, Mr. Mealer's son, was in critical condition yesterday at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, a hospital spokesman said. Mr. Mealer's wife, Shelly, 47, and Elliott Mealer, 18, another son, were treated at the Fulton County Health Center, Wauseon.

According to the report, H. Edward Johnson, 90, was headed south on Fulton County Road 19 when his car ran a stop sign at Route 2 and collided with the Mealers' eastbound sport utility vehicle. The SUV flipped, went off the south side of the road, and landed on its roof, troopers said.

Mr. Johnson, who also was treated at the Fulton County Health Center, was wearing a seat belt, but at least four of the five in the Mealer vehicle were not, troopers said.

The accident remained under investigation last night. Pettisville is about 40 miles west of Toledo.
It is being reported that Hollis was Elliot's girlfriend. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by this tragedy...

Injured Wauseon man has faith he'll walk again
23-year-old was in crash that killed 2

One of the most crucial numbers in 23-year-old Brock Mealer's life right now isn't on the tip of his tongue.

The Wauseon man who was injured in a Christmas Eve crash that killed his father and his brother's girlfriend thinks for a moment before saying he recalls a doctor putting the odds at 70 percent that he never will walk again.

That number, however, isn't getting much attention from Mr. Mealer.

It's the other 30 percent he was concentrating on from his bed in St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center yesterday.

"I really believe I'll be able to do it," Mr. Mealer said.

Mealer. I have been remiss in not mentioning the tragedy that befell Elliot Mealer and his family over Christmas. Mealer's father and girlfriend died in a car accident and his brother is unlikely to walk again; Mealer escaped without serious physical damage, but... yeah. Brock, Elliot's brother, has been moved to UM's hospital. The Diag swiped a post from GBW's premium boards and I'll swipe it from there:

Quote:
Elliott has a torn rotator cuff. He is obviously done playing hoops this season. Brock (his brother who is currently paralyzed from the accident) has been moved to the UM Hospital. What he needs and the family needs at this time is encouragement and support. If you are so inclined, I believe it would be a huge boost for you to let him know you are rooting for him. Please send cards, letters to

University Hospital
1500 East Medical Center Drive
Patient Unit 6 A
Ann Arbor, Michigan 48109

When you address the envelope write in the lower left hand corner of the envelope: Brock Mealer
UHA 6117

As always, please continue to pray. When a member of our Michigan family or a family member of the Michigan family is down and out, I hope we can all come together and do what we can to help. the family needs as much support at this time as it can get. Thank you.

The Canadian Press: Freshman from Ohio overcoming tragedy with Michigan football squad

Quote:
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Elliott Mealer always believed he was destined to play U.S. college football.

Just not at Michigan.

But there was the six-foot-six, 298-pound Mealer emerging from Schembechler Hall on Sunday in a uniform he grew up despising. Now it's part of a new beginning that's helping him slowly replace tragedy.

Mealer's new football home has provided solace 90 kilometres from Wauseon, Ohio, the small town where Mealer learned to love football and where last December, his life was changed.
