The 6-foot-1, 180-pound Stokes has double-digit scholarship offers, with a number of Big Ten schools in pursuit. Should the speedster want to make the West Coast his new home, he has an offer from UCLA.

"It's been fun," Stokes said. "A few years ago, I never thought I would have been in this situation. I'm very thankful for it."

When Schiano and Zook were in town to see Savage, they also stopped at Northeast to check in with Stokes. Word has it that Notre Dame boss Charlie Weis soon will show up at Cottman and Algon Avenues.

"When any head coach comes out to see you, that's a pretty big statement," Stokes said.

Stokes, who has been timed at 4.38 seconds in the 40-yard dash, is part of a tight-knit, Mayfair-based family. Support comes from his parents, Ronald and Juanita, brother Malik, and sister Brena.

On Feb. 17, Je'Ron and Malik Stokes, a sophomore at Northeast and the Vikings' starting QB, plan to participate in the rivals.com Five-Star Academy showcase at Rutgers.

"I'm probably not going to go to as many combines as I did last year," Je'Ron Stokes said. "I think people have already seen that I have the necessary talent to play at the Division I level."

An electrifying game breaker with excellent speed, Stokes could use more size on his current 6’1” and 180 pound frame. He has great hands, knows how to get open, makes a lot of acrobatic catches and is terrific after the catch. Stokes is back at Northeast after spending last season at Penn Charter, so he could play with his brother Malik, who will be one of the top prospects in the 2010 class. Philadelphia prospects are almost always under recruited but he already has offers from Pittsburgh, UCLA, Rutgers, Illinois, UConn, Iowa, NC State and Maryland. He is currently wide open.

Phillip Fulmer has been under some pressure of late. This week's commitment from ESPN Watch List wide receiver Je'Ron Stokes (Philadelphia/North East), however, has to have Volunteer fans excited. Stokes could be an immediate, much needed vertical threat for Tennessee. With his elite speed, Stokes should be a fine complement to 2008 signee Rod Wilks (Smyrna, Tenn.), a more physical receiver.

What Scouts Inc. looks for: Some guys are strictly downfield guys, and some are primarily underneath possession receivers, but the guy who can take the short pass and turn it into a spectacular event each time he gets the ball in space is the most coveted of pass catchers.

4. Je'Ron Stokes (Philadephia/North East)

Given his size (6-1, 178 pounds), Stokes is a guy capable of turning the short gain into a big play. His lateral quickness and good feet give him great change-of-direction. He also possesses excellent speed. When he makes the first defender miss and gets a seam, he can take it the distance.

Vol commit to take official visits

One of the top prospects in Big Ten country, wide receiver Je'Ron Stokes (Philadelphia/Northeast), committed to Tennessee in April and made his official visit there the weekend of Sept. 20. When Volunteer coach Phillip Fulmer resigned in early November, Stokes said he was still committed to Tennessee, but would not rule out the possibility of visiting other schools.

Stokes remains committed to the Vols, but has decided his official visit to Tennessee won't be the only one he takes.

"I'm going to take a few official visits," Stokes said. "I'll probably take two or three more official visits. But I'd rather not say who I'll visit at this point."

Penn State, Florida, UCLA, Michigan, Michigan State, Illinois, Iowa and Texas Tech are among the many schools that have offered Stokes a scholarship.

Maybe a visit to Happy Valley?
