Bearcats out, Lions in? -

The Nittany Lions would love to land West Chester (Ohio) Lakota West linebacker Jordan Hicks, the Buckeye State’s No. 1 prospect. Penn State offered Hicks a scholarship long ago, but their odds of landing him are not great.

However, they may stand a better chance of landing Hicks’ teammate, tight end Alex Smith. The 6-foot-5 and 225-pound Smith committed to Cincinnati during the winter, but it is not a done deal he will be a Bearcat.

“I haven’t de-committed,” Smith said. “But I’m going to visit some of the 20 other schools that offered. I committed to Cincinnati early and I haven’t really seen any other schools.”

Smith planning on PSU visit -

The Nittany Lions don’t have a tight end among their 13 verbal commitments to date, but they are working to change that.

The No. 1 tight end in Ohio, Alex Smith from West Chester (Ohio) Lakota West, plans to visit Penn State. When Smith does, he’ll have a scholarship offer from Joe Pa in his back pocket.

Smith has close to two-dozen offers including Penn State, LSU, Wisconsin, Miami, North Carolina, Illinois, Michigan and Cincinnati. Smith committed to the Bearcats during the winter and says he is still committed. But it is far from a certainty he ends up at his hometown school.

Cincinnati moved their tight ends coach, Mike Elston, to the defensive line and it is not known if they will have a tight ends coach next season. Because of that - and Smith’s desire to make sure he made the right decision - he is looking at other schools.

Kurelic's Comment: Smith is a viable option for the Nittany Lions' 2010 recruiting class. However, right now it appears Penn State's top 2010 tight end target is Annandale (N.J.) North Hunterdon's Kevin Haplea.

Scout.com: Smith's Recruitment Coming Into Focus

8/6

Favorites are UNC, Wisconsin, Michigan, Miami, LSU, Kentucky, and Cincy. Thought the atmosphere of Wisconsin's campus was unique and loved the way they use the tight ends. Returning on an official for the first game of the season. #1 TE for Michigan. Wants to make an early decision.

Scout.com: Smith Sets Things Straight

8/16

By Dave Berk. Alex says he just got back from a trip to Wisconsin which he really enjoyed...has narrowed down his lists of schools a lot and may schedule two or three schools for possible official visits...wants to see Miami (FL), LSU, maybe give Kentucky another look or a school like South Carolina. About one month away from a final decision.

North Carolina making a move on TE Smith - ESPN

Quote:
Tight end Alex Smith (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) headed south for his second official visit this past weekend. Smith, who made an early commitment to Cincinnati but has been taking a look at some other schools, visited North Carolina over the weekend.
"It went real good," Smith said. "The campus is beautiful. I had a lot of fun. I'm glad my mom got to go and got to see it. I visited there in the summer, but she hadn't seen it."
At least for now, Smith said he remains committed to the Bearcats. However, he has now made official visits to Wisconsin and North Carolina and says both schools are in the running.
