Houston Chronicle article. Will enroll early.

Quote:
"The people at Michigan suggested I try to get up there early, and it's going to give me an advantage on the other (2008) recruits, and even on some of the recruits from the class of 2007. They want me to get up there and work on things like returning punts and becoming a better receiver, and hopefully, I'll be able to work my way up the depth chart and be returning punts on Saturdays as a freshman." Stonum was recruited by every major college program in the country, and that resulted in a who's-who list of visits to the Vikings fieldhouse by USC's Pete Carroll, Florida's Urban Meyer, Alabama's Nick Saban, Texas Tech's Mike Leach and Boise State's Chris Petersen, among others.
"The funny thing is a couple of old-school coaches like (Michigan's) Lloyd Carr and (Florida State's) Bobby Bowden were among the crews that didn't come, and Darryl ended up with Michigan, so I'm not sure how important all those visits really were," Creech said. "Recruiting has gone so far to the left from what it used to be. It's just a different ballgame than it used to be."
There were times when Stonum had to shut down his cell phone.
"It really picked up right after last season, and the text messages were coming in one right after another," he said. "I guess it's helped that two of my best friends, (2007 Dulles' graduates) Troy Woolfolk (a cornerback) and Brandon Herron (linebacker), are already at Michigan. I've been going through some of the Michigan offseason workouts with them, and I've been running track with Troy since we were 11. It's nice to have a couple of former Dulles teammates there."

If the coaches suggested it like he said, I think it's kind of obvious that they aren't expecting Mario Manningham to be around in 2008.

I don't think this kid will be going anywhere, even if Carr leaves.

He's got two good friends and former high school teammates already there in Brandon Herron and Troy Woolfolk. I think the idea of playing with Mallett is probably enticing to him, and also Mario Manningham is probably going to leave early if he can. If Mario does leave early, then that pretty much assures that Stonum will see the field as a true frosh. Arrington, Mathews, Hemingway, and Clemons are all good receivers with good size and hands, but they are different type of receivers than Manningham or Stonum. Hell Stonum is probably faster than Manningham.

Stonum is getting lots of attention from other coaches since Lloyd Carr's retirement, but says he will still attend Michigan and enroll early there.

By S. Webb at the Michigan site. Stonum says that many coaches have been back in contact with him since the word of Carr stepping down has got out. He says that he has talked to McGuffie, and is still solid to Michigan. That said, he does say that if coach Jackson leaves he isn't sure what he will do. He may visit Florida this weekend.

From the Michign site. Stonum again says he will be a Wolverine, and plans on enrolling in January. He also adds that McGuffie will be a Wolverine as long as Jackson is still a coach there, which they both expect.

FRESH WOLVERINE: Incoming wideout Darryl Stonum enrolled early at U-M

Quote:
January 8, 2008

FREE PRESS NEWS SERVICES

Incoming freshman wide receiver Darryl Stonum from Fort Bend Dulles (Texas) is already enrolled at Michigan and taking classes this semester.

Given the possible loss of Adrian Arrington and Mario Manningham to the NFL draft, the advantage of being on campus for spring practice is significant.

Stonum, a four-star recruit according to Rivals.com, follows the lead of past early enroll Wolverines like Ryan Mallett, Kevin Grady and Carlos Brown. Last season, Michigan had three freshmen and one junior college transfer enroll early.

Notes: The returning Michigan players had a meeting today with most of the coaching staff and only a few coaching spots were not filled at the time.
