June 03, 2008 Spartanburg Junior Lands First Offer
By Phil Kornblut
Michigan has made a verbal offer to junior ATH Cornelius Jones (6-3 185) of Spartanburg according to his coach Freddie Brown. "Nobody knows about him," Bown said. "He's very fast. I sent a tape to them and and they offered off the tape. I've also sent a copy of the tape to USC and Clemson. He can fly." Brown didn't play football last season for the Vikings. He'll be used a quarterback this fall.

Spartanburg quarterback Jones gets offer from Michigan | GoUpstate.com | Spartanburg, S.C.
Quote:
Cornelius Jones hasn’t played a down for the Spartanburg Vikings varsity football team yet, but Michigan has seen enough to offer him a scholarship.
The junior quarterback received his first offer Tuesday, after Vikings coach Freddie Brown sent the Big Ten school a five-minute video of Jones from a scrimmage.
The film was enough to attract attention.
“I was shocked,” Jones said of the offer.
“After I sent the tape, no, I wasn’t surprised at all,” Brown said. “I can see who he’s going to be in this offense in two years.”
Brown said Jones’ speed helped his stock quickly rise.
In the offense that Brown wants to utilize, Jones (6-foot-3, 185 pounds) will be a mobile quarterback, similar to the kind expected to be used by head coach Rich Rodriguez at Michigan.
Jones hasn’t played football in the Spartanburg system for a couple of years after he got into some trouble, he said.
He was one of the players that Brown went out into the community and got back in school during the spring.
“He’s given me another chance, and I want to make sure I make the most of it,” Jones said.
Jones said he is working hard to learn the offense and how to be a leader for the coming season.
With the first offer on the table, Jones and Brown said they expect more to come.
“I think he’s a guy that you have to get your name in the pot now,” Brown said. “(Michigan was) the first ones to offer him, and I’ll tell you, he is appreciative. People are going to have to do some recruiting now to get him.”

Michigan has firmed up an offer for a speedy, dual-threat quarterback from the Southeast. Cornelius Jones (Spartanburg, S.C./Spartanburg) was offered verbally during the fall and the Wolverines coaches recently stopped by the school and confirmed that the offer was on the table, according to Spartanburg head coach Freddie Brown. Duke head coach David Cutcliffe also personally reviewed Jones' film and extended an offer from the Blue Devils, according to Brown.

Are they recruiting him as a QB?
If so, that means they have offers out to Devin Gardner, Robert Bolden, Cornelius Jones and Christian Green...pretty wide net considering Gardner is supposedly the top target.

Right now, I think it's an ATH offer. Green isn't leaving the state of Florida (FSU seems to lead). Gardner is a battle Michigan appears to be losing at the moment. Bolden is the backup plan to Gardner, AFAIK.

A) I don't believe the hype regarding OSU and Gardner...I think he is wide open right now
B) I don't think Bolden is a backup plan...if he wanted to commit to UM today I think they would take him...I know unionfutura really likes him and the MSU staff seems high on him as well

You mean the color red isn't a valid reason to pick a school? Excuse me, scarlet. I know you Buckeyes don't like to mix those up.

Fair enough. You and union know more than I do.
And we all know that MSU is the king of in-state recruiting, right?

I should preface that B is just my opinions...not based on anything substantial...

3 with UM offers. UM has 3 in-state commits with MSU offers. Sure is lopsided. That's not counting the OOS commits that UM has won out on.

From the UM site. Jones says Michigan has been in contact for over a year not, but just recently offered. He has always followed the Wolverines and thinks it would be "amazing" to play for them in front of so many people. Georgia, Duke and West Virginia also stand out to Cornelius, who will take his time making his choice.

From the Duke site. Jones now holds offers from Duke, Michigan and Wake forest and is getting interest from Georgia, Georgia Tech, West Virginia and North Carolina. He will visit the Blue Devils for sure, and adds that he loves the fact they give him a great eduaction to fall back on should football not work out. Education, the staff, and the program as whole will be some of the factors in his choice.
