He’s the tallest (5-10) of an army of waterbugs that Rich Rodriguez has brought into Michigan in this class and he’s quick, shifty and can go downtown with the ball. Liberty senior Fitzgerald Toussaint, Maplewood senior Eric Rupe and Maplewood sophomore Jordan Moxley captured state titles at Saturday’s fourth annual state indoor track and field meet at the University of Akron.

Toussaint, an All-Ohio running back who is headed to the University of Michigan, won the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.96, edging Columbiana junior Nick Melone (7.04), who placed second.

Toussaint finished sixth in the 100 at the 2007 state outdoor meet, but missed last track season due to a hamstring injury. He will be among the favorites for this year’s outdoor 100 crown.

When Fitzgerald Toussaint was a freshman, he played football in the fall, basketball in the winter and track in the spring — and was healthy for all three.

The next two years, Toussaint didn’t play a winter sport and struggled with hamstring injuries during track season.

Coincidence? His coach didn’t think so.

“We told him, ‘You’re gonna play basketball or run indoor [track],’ ” said Liberty track coach Jay Cripe. “He chose indoor.”

Good choice. As the Leopards struggled to an 8-14 mark in basketball, Toussaint, now a senior, won an indoor state title in the 60-meter dash.

Liberty senior Fitzgerald Toussaint ran a blistering 10.86 to cruise in the 100, easily edging Fitch junior Te’John Lawrence (11.17).

Toussaint, who won a state indoor title in the 60 in March, also anchored the third-place 4x100 relay, which included fellow University of Michigan football recruit Isaiah Bell.

A third Michigan recruit, junior Antonio Kinard, joined Bell on the sixth-place 4x200 relay.
