Prep Report - Hillsborough Sports - from TBO.com Blogs

Quote:
Wharton junior and strong safety Jairus Jones picked up four more offers on Friday, brining his total to six. On Friday morning, Wharton coach David Mitchell said Michigan State, Iowa and defending national champion LSU offered.

“(LSU) came just one day, I gave them some film and it was on and rolling,” Mitchell said.

No more than 10 seconds after hanging up the phone, Mitchell called back to announce another offer had come in.

“Indiana,” he said. “Jairus just ran up and told me.”

Jones (6-foot-2, 210) had 89 tackles last season with one interception. At running back, he had 60 carries for 332 yards and three TDs. Nebraska and FAU have already offered.

Mitchell also said Jairus’ father, James, is returning to the program to be an offensive assistant after spending one season as head coach at Pompano Beach Ely High. After spending seven years with Wharton as an assistant coach, James told Mitchell last spring he had accepted the position as head coach in his hometown.

Jones, a former standout at the University of Florida, was the 13th pick overall in the 1983 NFL draft to the Detroit Lions.

No decision soon for Wharton safety

Quote:
Wharton safety Jairus Jones, whom Rivals.com rates as the country's 63rd-best athlete, wanted to pick a college before the start of his senior season, but that now appears unlikely. "I'm still trying to decide," he said Tuesday.

He has plenty of options. Of the schools that have offered him a scholarship, Jones says LSU leads, followed by Michigan State and Nebraska. Iowa, Illinois and Indiana also are in the mix. Florida, which hasn't offered, remains in the hunt, too. "If (the Gators) offer, they'll jump to like one or two," Jones said.

Here's what Jones, who also plays running back and wide receiver, had to say about each of his leaders ...

LSU: "I don't really know that much about them. But one of my dad's old teammates is there. And they're always in the top 10. That's why I like them."

Nebraska: "They're an up-and-coming team. Their defense used to be real good back in the '90s. Maybe I can help get them back to that type of defense."

Michigan State: "That's close to where I used to live when I was born (when his dad, running back James Jones, played for the Lions)."

Florida: "That's been my favorite team since I was real young."

Jones expects to take five official visits this fall and have a decision sometime after the season ends.

The next PSL Division 1 prospect? | Freep.com | Detroit Free Press

Quote:
If Thomas Gordon does select Michigan this Friday, look for Jairus Jones of Wharton High School in Tampa, Florida to become a top priority for the class. Jones is listed at 6-foot-2, 210-pounds and runs a 4.5 forty-yard dash. He is rated the #63 athlete prospect in the nation by Rivals.com for the class of 2009 and currently has offers from a host of BCS programs including Michigan State, Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska, LSU and Illinois.

The information that SpartanMag.com has is that Jones will be in East Lansing on the 18th of October when Michigan State takes on the Ohio State Buckeyes. Jones is familiar with Coach Dantonio due to his father being the former football coach at Pompano Beach Ely High School.

Ely High School was one of the top talent producing high schools in the nation when Jones’ father was coaching there, and both Michigan State under Nick Saban and Ohio State under Jim Tressel actively recruited multiple players from there.

From the NC State site. Jones talks more about wanting a LSU offer, and says that NC State and Nebraska stand out from the schools who have offered.

Getting Complicated By Allen Wallace

Jairus Jones was supposed to visit Michigan State on Oct. 18 and was also in talks with LSU and Nebraska for visits. Turns out that LSU and Nebraska are no longer recruiting Jones and the only school that he's still hearing from consistently is North Carolina State. "I haven't really talked to the others in a while," Jones said. "I need to call Michigan State and see about the visit..."
