THE HUDDLE 2009: Tevin McCaskill

There he was, surrounded by all-americans, all-state performers and college recruiters and press from all over the state of Florida. Tevin McCaskill, just a sophomore, was in the middle of a Glades Central and Miami Northwestern matchup. It was everything high school football should be in the state of Florida, and yes, it was just a spring game played in May.

As talented players from both sides of the field were being looked at and photographed by recruiting services and fan sites, McCaskill did his best to nblend in, but it was too tough. Amid, the Marcus Forstons and Sean Spences, here was this gifted football player, who had many wanting to know more!

Today, IN THE HUDDLE brings you back to South Florida as we pay a visit to the ‘West, Miami Northwestern, which has turned into one of the most recognized high school programs in the country.

IN THE HUDDLE has taken you to practice sessions in Citra, pre-game workouts in Jay, and camps and combines from Fellsmere to Miami, where McCaskill and the rebuilt Bulls hope to stay in contention for yet another state title run.

SCOUTING MCCASKILL: Often times when a solid group of players come through a high school football program, there are usually more that follows. In a year that watched one of the most impressive senior classes in the history of high school football anywhere in this country, there were also underclassmen who were responsible for the success.

Here is an athlete who can get it done anywhere on the field. Going back to his youth football days, McCaskill was one of the elite two-way players. While the Bulls will need him as a safety, he can also fill one of the five receivers that graduated.

As a safety, he follows in the line of many of the area’s top players – speed, tremendous athletic ability and a knack of playing all over the field.

Having the opportunity to watch him live many times this past season and over the last year, we appreciated him more and more every time we had the chance to watch him play. His ability to read and react to plays is something that every college coach has commented on. He is a tremendous football player who will be asked to do a lot this year.

As a receiver, he is equally as talented. Great hands, impressive burst of speed and knowledge of what it takes to get open.

MCCASKILL MILESTONES: Was one of three underclassmen who started the contest at Southlake Carroll, Texas, and the state championship game and was among the top tacklers on the team. He also had three interceptions.

WHAT THE COLLEGE RECRUITERS ARE SAYING: “When you stand out on a team loaded with Division 1A prospects in every direction like he did this past season, you have to have that something special.”

HIS BAGS ARE PACKED: While it would be easy to see the pipeline to the University of Miami continue from the ‘West, receivers and safeties are what the ‘Canes really have the most of, so you can count on him keeping his options wide open.

Canes recruit McCaskill ready to lead Bulls - 07/18/2008 - MiamiHerald.com

Quote:
McCaskill, third on The Miami Herald's top 25 players in Miami-Dade, has received offers from Miami, Florida, South Florida and Clemson, but still has not made up his mind on where he'll play his college ball.

McCaskill grew up a Hurricanes fans, but says that won't influence his decision.

''It's not about what I want, it's about what school really wants me,'' McCaskill said. ``So I can make it to the next level and make it to the pros.''

The 6-2, 185-pound senior recorded 25 tackles, three interceptions and blocked a punt last season. Of his three picks, arguably none was bigger than his last-minute interception on national television against Texas' Southlake Carroll.

McCaskill intercepted Carroll quarterback Riley Dodge late in the fourth quarter to seal the Bulls' 29-21 win and help the team lock up the No. 1 spot in the country.

''[McCaskill] brings two years experience and is an exceptional athlete,'' Northwestern coach Billy Rolle said. ``He can play all the defensive back positions -- outside of taking care of himself he's got to be helping the younger guys perform at a higher level.''

McCaskill, who runs a 4.3 second 40-yard dash and can max out at 225 on the bench press, seems to echo his coach's feelings.

''I want to work hard and let my team know I can be a leader,'' McCaskill said. ``I want to show them that hard work pays off, and we can get another [state championship].''
