C.J. Odom is on a short list when it comes to the best Fort Myers High School football players ever. He is at the top of the list when it comes to the University of Miami.
The talented senior defensive back verbally committed to Hurricane assistant Tommie Robinson early Tuesday.
“It felt like a place I could be comfortable at ... a place where they make you into a man inside and outside of the program,” said the 6-foot-1, 210-pound senior, who has 64 tackles through six games this season.
The last Fort Myers High player to attend Miami was Jammi German. German was tabbed as the top senior in Florida in 1992.
“We had a nice run in the late ‘70s through Jammi and it’s nice to have another one back in the fold,” said Green Wave coach Sam Sirianni.
Miami offered Odom a scholarship this summer after he took an unofficial visit to the Coral Gables campus.
“They (Miami) had been talking to me from the beginning. Coach Robinson recruited me very hard and I felt comfortable with him and coach (Randy) Shannon.
Odom also had offers from Florida, South Florida, Alabama, Nebraska and Colorado.
“He’s a good athlete,’’ Sirianni said. “We’ve had some good players, and he’s in that short list of one of the better ones we’ve ever had.’’
A verbal commitment is non-binding until national letter-of-intent signing day in February. Odom doesn’t see himself wavering from the Hurricanes.
“At this point, it’s a 100 percent done deal,’’ Odom said.
Odom informed Sirianni of his decision after talking it over with his family.
“He has been blessed with some great God-given talent. He has a body that is college-ready and has a bright future ahead of him,” said Sirianni.
Odom’s commitment gives Miami 19 verbals for the 2008 recruiting class. Rivals.com ranks the class in the top 10 nationally.
Miami hasn’t decided if it will use him at linebacker or defensive back.
“I just want to play right away and help out wherever I can,” said Odom.
