Manny Navarro's Spring Tour, Part 6 - 06/04/2008 - MiamiHerald.com
Quote:
I was having a friendly debate with recruiting expert Larry Blustein last week regarding who the top overall football prospect in South Florida could be when our discussion was interrupted by a college assistant from one of the state's Bowl Championship Series schools.
''I'll tell you who the best young football player in South Florida is,'' the assistant said. ``It's that kid from Southwest High -- the 10th-grader. Best kid I've seen anywhere all spring.''
That kid, that sophomore, that 2010 recruit, is 5-9, 170-pound do-it-all athlete LaMarcus Joyner. And after touring South Florida high schools for nearly a month this spring, I'm close to agreeing.
Joyner, who boasts 4.3-speed in the 40-yard dash according to his coach, was the most impressive player I saw on the field in the Eagles' 17-8 spring game victory against Hialeah on a hot afternoon May 22.
Joyner played nearly every down, intercepting a pass at safety on defense, catching passes at receiver and zig-zagging his way around defenders while toting the rock at running back. By the end of the scrimmage, he was cramping up and being treated with a fan and spraying water by team trainers. It was the only sign of weakness in Joyner's game.
''Coaching LaMarcus is like training a monster,'' said 30-year-old Southwest coach Patrick Burrows, who played at Killian and at Florida A&M.
``He'll do anything you tell him to do at 100 miles per hour. He's chiseled like a rock, less than 2 percent body fat. But he's got to hydrate. And when he doesn't start hydrating at least four days before a game, he starts to run out of steam. But I'm pretty sure that's only because he's young. I can't wait to see him when he's a man.''
Joyner is already the man at Southwest. Last season, he registered more than 100 tackles, blocked four punts, recorded seven sacks and rolled up more than 300 yards on offense to go with five touchdowns. Burrows said he plans to use Joyner even more this fall -- like he did this spring.
By December, Joyner could be the most coveted junior in South Florida. Although colleges are not allowed to offer underclassmen scholarships, the staff at Southwest say Florida, Miami, Georgia and West Virginia have already given the impression they'll have a scholarship offer waiting for Joyner next spring.

ESPN - Brown talks visits, Buckeyes lead for Berry - Football Recruiting
Quote:
Class of 2010 cornerback LaMarcus Joyner (Miami/Southwest) is expecting a lot of mail on Sept. 2 (Sept. 1 is Labor Day) since Monday is officially the first day juniors can receive written scholarship offers from college programs. Miami, Florida State, Florida and Central Florida all are expected to send offers that day, according to Joyner.
"They all told me the same thing when I visited there unofficially this summer. They told me that they were coming after me and to expect the offer."
Though it is early, Joyner said he would prefer to stay in the state of Florida to play college football.

FVSports - The Elite100: Class of 2010
Quote:
10. Lamarcus Joyner
5'9" / 170 pounds / Miami Southeast High School / Miami, Florida
Contenders: Florida State, Miami, Florida, Boston College, Tennessee
Scouting Report: Nicknamed Mr. Frankenstein, Joyner is the definition of electric in the secondary. His instincts, both against the run and in coverage, are something that very few kids have. Makes plays all over the field. Pound-for-pound, probably the most physical kid in this class. Will knock receivers out of games. In coverage, Joyner has very good COD ability. While he doesn't have a great size/speed ratio, Joyner can turn and run with receivers that time a lot faster, and his vertical and wiry athleticism masks his lack of height. Has the versatility to play corner or safety at the next two levels. Joyner is head-and-shoulders above his peers in a somewhat down class of corners.

FSU & OSU stand out for LJ, with a slight lead for OSU thanks to their DB tradition and style, but FSU is a longtime favorite. Will decide on signing day after taking it all in.

By B Greene at the Ohio State site. Joyner was the MVP of the Express 7-on-7 in Miami, showing off his skills as a lockdown corner and WR. Joyner talks about his interest in Ohio State, coaches Tressel and Haynes, and the possibility of playing with Jamaal Berry. He will decide on siging day and says the Buckeyes and FSU are at the top of his list.

JC Shurtburtt: South Florida's best show up for UA Miami combine - ESPN
Quote:
Updated: February 16, 2009, 10:57 AM ET
By JC Shurburtt
Scouts Inc.
DAVIE, Fla. -- Many of South Florida's top prospects took part in the Under Armour Combine on Sunday at the Dolphins Training Facility, including standout cornerback LaMarcus Joyner, who could be one of the best at his position in the country.
Though there were many high-end prospects at the event, Joyner was perhaps the most celebrated and impressive. The 5-foot-9, 165-pounder is explosive, fast, can change direction and is strong for his size. Joyner posted a 4.47 second 40-yard dash, but it was his final event of the day in the testing portion of the combine and he said following his second try (that was when he got the 4.47) that he felt he could run a better time if he were not as fatigued. He had a stellar l-cone time of 7 seconds. (And one note to remember, all the times are unofficial and won't be posted official until later in the week).
Joyner also was impressive during the one-on-one and seven-on-seven drills toward the end of the camp and also in the defensive back drills, where he showed quick feet and the ability to turn, run and close fast.
"I did what I do every time I come on the field, which is compete," Joyner said. "It's like they say in South Florida, you turn on the faucet and the athletes just come pouring out. There is always someone out there to compete against. That's why I always work hard to get better."
Joyner is in the process of changing schools. He played last season at Miami Southwest and plans to transfer to another school in the area. Columbus, where standout running back Jakhari Gore plays, is rumored to be one destination, but Joyner alluded to the fact that there is another school that is a possibility.
"I am still going through the process (of transferring)," he said. "I am going to another school, but it may not be Columbus. I don't want to say what the other school is right now."
Joyner said he might take unofficial visits to Florida State, Miami, Florida, Southern California and Ohio State.

By M Bakas. Transfered to St Thomas Aquinas. His uncle says it had nothing to do with recruiting and everything to do with academics.
