Greenwood coach Shell Dula will field another strong team in 2008 and the Eagles will feature two of the state's premier prospects in DE Sam Montgomery (6-5 240) and DB D.J. Swearinger (6-1 205). Montgomery totaled 65 tackles last season with 15 sacks and 20 tackles for loss. "He plays awfully hard," Dula said. "He has a motor that runs. He plays every play full speed. He has good strength and extremely good quickness. God has blessed him with a big body. He can easily go 280 pounds and not lose any speed. He's only played one year of football so the potential for him is unreal." Montgomery has offers from USC, Clemson, Alabama, North Carolina and NC State. He's made an unofficial visit to Clemson. North Carolina wants him to visit this weekend and he might unless he has a basketball game. USC and Georgia also have invited him for visits. Dula said Montgomery has no favorites rightn ow. "He's enjoyed getting involved in this process," he said. "He's looking for a place where the team concept is foremost."

Clocked at 4.44 seconds in the 40-yard dash and standing 6-foot-5, Montgomery has measurable assets that have helped make him a standout defensive end. But defensive line coach Dennis Thomas said there’s something else that has worked in Montgomery’s favor on the football field.

“I think Sam’s motor runs pretty much better than anyone we’ve had since I’ve been at Greenwood,” Thomas said. “He’s a hard-nosed player, and I think once Sam realized his athletic ability -- his total strength -- he could dominate somebody, and just go out an play football, I think he became a real football player.”

After becoming a real football player, colleges started taking notice.

Dula credited the program’s traditional strength with helping earn Montgomery the college attention he’s received. He also said with college coaches expected at spring practice to watch Montgomery, he could help out his teammates just the same.

Based on one season of varsity football, Montgomery has earned scholarship offers from Southern California, Clemson, South Carolina, Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, Miami, Florida State, Maryland, North Carolina State, North Carolina and Duke.

From the FSU site. Sam is up to 13 offers, and says he is open at this point. He will take all of his visits, and will not decide until the end of the recruiting process.

DE Sam Montgomery (6-5 240) of Greenwood is a wanted man these days, and not just by college recruiters. Girls have interrupted his recruiting activities. Montgomery said a prom last weekend and a prom this coming weekend forced him to curtail recruiting for a couple of weeks, but things will pick back up soon. He plans to take visits to Florida State, NC State and North Carolina in a few weeks. He visited NC State a couple of weeks ago but that trip was cut short because one of his coaches had to leave early. He also has been to USC and Clemson multiple times. Montgomery now has offers from USC, Clemson, Alabama, North Carolina, NC State, Maryland, Southern Cal, Miami, LSU, Auburn, Illinois, Tennessee, Duke, Florida State, Florida and Vanderbilt. Montgomery was chosen for the Under Armour All America Game, and he said he and Clemson commitment offensive lineman JK Jay have already made arraingements to be roomates. Montgomery said he and Jay are very good friends.

Sam Montgomery says that Miami is recruiting him the hardest. "They seem to be taking time with what they send me," he said. "Brochures and flyers are nice, but they write actual handwritten notes. I love how it's real there. They don't sugar coat anything. They are honest with you and coach Randy Shannon is doing a good job. I'd love to be part of their rebuilding team and help them win

ESPN - First year of high school football proves fruitful for Montgomery - Insider

Sam Montgomery, 6-foot-4, 220 pounds
ESPN 150 Watch List defensive end
Greenwood (S.C.)

Sam Montgomery has been taking much of the recruiting world by storm. Despite 2007 being his first season of high school football, he quickly rose among the nation's elite defensive-line recruits. He has racked up more than 15 scholarship offers, been named an Under Armour All-American and is an ESPN 150 Watch List prospect. None of this has really shocked the athletic defensive end.

"I worked out, kept myself in top-top shape. I always knew I could be a great football player, I just never went out," said Montgomery.

He played football in middle school but concentrated on basketball, his first love, when he hit high school. It was some poorly-received advice that kept him off the gridiron.

"At first I didn't trust the head coach [Shell Dula]. Some of the past players said that he messed them up. Being hard headed I listened to the other guys," Montgomery said.

From the South Carolina site. Sam loved his trip to South Carolina and could easily see himself playing for the Gamecoacks. South Carolina, USC, Miami, LSU and Clemson have started to distance themselves as Motgomery's favorites. He will decide on signing day.

From TheWolverine...has begun to narrow his list but is not ready to reveal it, although he does confirm Michigan has made the cut and he will definitely make an official to Ann Arbor.
