He is extremely fast for a LB and hits like a truck. He reads plays well and shoots the gap very well. Great off the edge and he also is a smart player...he does a good job of not outrunning plays. He does a great job of making the big hit when he can but he also breaks his feet down well and makes a solid tackle. He is also a good RB where he shows breakaway speed and good power. I would say he is closer to an ATH because he can play SS, Will, or even RB on offense. He is just an athlete you don't pass on if you can get him.

First, Jenkins, who recently picked up offers from USC, UCLA, Ohio State and Michigan, Milloy says. "We all know it doesn't get that much better than USC, whether you want to go that far or not," Milloy said. "But he's a different guy. He's not too impressed with all that stuff. I don't know what he's going to do. Probably he'll go to Maryland or Virginia."

Still, Jenkins plans a West Coast trip next month to see USC, UCLA and Stanford.

Milloy said that UCLA Coach Rick Neuheisel called from an airport on the way to a coaching clinic in Las Vegas. Broaching the geographical distance from Washington to Los Angeles, Neuheisel said that he was playing golf the next day with St. Albans alum -- and former All-Met Player of the Year -- Jonathan Ogden and that former UCLA standout Kenny Easley is from Norfolk. "If we get him out here, he'll never want to leave," Milloy said Neuheisel told him.

It's impressive enough when an athlete garners Gatorade Player of the Year honors as a high school junior. It's even more extraordinary, however, when the recipient complements his outstanding gridiron skills with exceptional work in the classroom.

ESPN 150 Watch List outside linebacker Jelani Jenkins (Wheaton, Md./Good Counsel) may have boasted 1,014 total yards as a running back and seven tackles per game as a hard hitting defender, but it is his distinguished 3.9 GPA as a national scholar-athlete at Good Counsel High School in Maryland that is perhaps most remarkable.

"I really take academics just as serious as football," Jenkins stated adamantly.

The Rounds Continue for Jenkins - Josh Barr's Recruiting Insider

The college coaches continue to filter into Good Counsel to visit with All-Met linebacker Jelani Jenkins.

Yesterday it was assistant coaches from UCLA, Stanford, Wake Forest and Michigan State, which was represented by Ted Gill -- "an old friend coming through since 1970," Good Counsel Coach Bob Milloy said.

On Monday, Penn State's Ron Vanderlinden and Larry Johnson were at the Olney school. Last week, Michigan, Notre Dame and Virginia were among those to come through.

While Jenkins already has been to a handful of schools in the region, Milloy expects the player to take three recruiting trips this summer as he attempts to narrow his choices: one to the sunshine state to visit Florida and Miami; one to the West Coast to see UCLA, USC and Stanford; and one to the rust belt, for Ohio State, Michigan and Notre Dame.

"He's going to go there and check them all out and hopefully he'll have a feeling and like one of them more than the others," Milloy said.
