Male standout Heyman commits to Cards
Quote:
It took a little longer than anticipated, but Male High School standout Dexter Heyman is ready to join his brother, Earl, playing football at the University of Louisville.
The 6-foot-4, 215-pound Heyman said after helping the basketball Bulldogs to a victory in today’s King of the Bluegrass tournament that he’s ready to commit to U of L.
“I’m going to make a commitment this week,” Heyman said after getting 11 points and 13 rebounds in a 72-53 win over Henry Clay in the King of the Bluegrass Holiday Classic at Fairdale. “I re-evaluated everything and just figured out it’s past the point to be at and I really have to get down to the nitty gritty.
“I felt like I had to be honest and make a commitment and I feel like Louisville is the best situation for me.”
A member of The Courier-Journal’s first-team All-State squad, Heyman said he would call the U of L coaches in the next few days to make his commitment official.
“I want to be in place where I am comfortable and a place that will be really good for me as a player and a person,” said Heyman, who played a lot of defensive end at Male but could play a number of positions for the Cardinals. He even played wide receiver.
Heyman said a number of other schools were still recruiting him, despite his connections with U of L. Earl Heyman will be a senior defensive lineman next season.
The younger Heyman said those ties made him look at the situation harder.
“I wanted to see how everything played out (at U of L) as far as the coaching changes and the fanbase,” he said. “I wanted to know they were looking at me for me and not just as Earl’s brother. I didn’t want to go to Louisville off of politics.”
With the insight he learned from his brother and several former Male teammates at U of L, Heyman said he felt like he could make the right decision.
And despite a 6-6 season and some criticism in coach Steve Kragthorpe’s first season, Heyman believes U of L is that school. The Cardinals have made several coaching changes since the season and still haven’t hired a defensive coordinator.
“I think with the new coaching changes that this program is headed in the right direction,” Heyman said. “In my opinion, I feel like in his first year coach (Kragthorpe) did a really good job. He established himself and earned the respect of his players.
“I think this program is headed in the right direction.”
Veteran Male High School coach Bob Redman recently said Heyman was one of the most talented players in school history.
“He has a chance to be a tremendous player at the next level and then even beyond that (in the NFL),” Redman said.
