St. X - No. 1 in nation?
Just got back from vacation and still catching up, but wanted to note something that came this way recently:
One of the national poll guys e-mailed to say he was considering rating St. Xavier No. 1 nationally in his preseason football ratings. (No, it's not USA Today). With RB Darius Ashley, LBs Fred Craig and Nick Schneider and K/P Danny Milligan among a slew of top returnees, the Bombers could be rated highly in several polls.
The pollster I'm referring to has done this for years, so it's not just some guy in his basement. Or maybe he does work out of his basement, for all I know. Lots of people have nice, finished basements and big TVs down there and everything. But anyway, this is an established poll and should be out around Aug. 6.
Anyone seen any national preseason polls yet? If so, please shout.

Went out to visit with St. X football coach Steve Specht today as we gear up for our 2007 football preview. Among other things, Specht said he believes Louisville is the leader for RB Darius Ashley but Specht said he also is recommending Ashley take a hard look at Virginia.

Ashley, Craig zeroing in
St. Xavier football coach Steve Specht says he thinks RB Darius Ashley and FS Fred Craig will commit to colleges within the next week.
Here is the latest Rivals story on Ashley.
Specht says he believes Louisville has been the leader for Ashley, with Virginia also high on the list. With Craig, Specht said Stanford is high on his list but offers have come from far and wide including UC, Air Force, Duke, Indiana, Louisville, Michigan State, Nebraska, Vanderbilt and West Virginia.
"I'd think they may commit within the week, but with these situations you don't really know," Specht said. "It can change quickly."

My cousin is Stephon Ball I don't know if he's ont his site or not, but he's Darius' best friend. They both want to go to Louisville, it's #1 for both of them but my cousin doesn't have an offer yet. He said they will wait for the offer but if it doesn't come they'll probably go to Virginia unless another team comes up.

St. Xavier's Darius Ashley injured an ankle after being taken down on his second carry of the game. The St. X staff erred on the side of caution with a game against nationally ranked DeMatha, Md., looming this week.

The Enquirer - St. X star doubtful for ESPN showdown
Quote:
St. Xavier star running back Darius Ashley (sprained ankle) is doubtful for today's game against DeMatha (Md.), Bombers coach Steve Specht said Saturday.
"It's still a game-time decision, but I doubt he plays," Specht said.
St. Xavier is rated No. 4 and DeMatha No. 5 nationally by USA Today, with today's game (noon, ESPN) the marquee matchup of the Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge. Specht said Ashley did not practice all week after twisting an ankle in last Saturday's 35-7 season-opening win over Winton Woods.

Update: Darius Ashley
Cincinnati St. Xavier running back Darius Ashley hasn’t played in a game since spraining an ankle on Aug. 25. His team is ranked as high as No. 1 nationally.
Ashley could return this weekend. But despite not being able to play, The Cincinnati Enquirer high school blog reports that Ashley is nearing a college decision.
The 5-foot-8, 190-pound Ashley has narrowed his list of schools to Louisville and Virginia and will visit the latter this weekend. Ashley told the paper that Louisville has a slight edge for now, but Virginia was the first school to offer him a scholarship.
Ashley ran for 1,600 yards and 28 touchdowns as a sophomore and followed that up last season with 1,500 yards and 20 TDs.

Cincinnati St. Xavier 30, Bishop Chatard 0 | IndyStar.com
Quote:
CINCINNATI -- A high school football team with as many talented players as nationally rated Cincinnati St. Xavier can overcome the loss of a key running back.
St. Xavier has certainly proven that this season what with star running back Darius Ashley being limited severely by an injured ankle since the first week. Nevertheless, the No. 1 Bombers have continued to win. They improved to 5-0 Friday with a 30-0 victory against Bishop Chatard at Ballaban Field.
For the first time this season, though, St. Xavier had to rely on Ashley.
"The thing is with Darius, is he's been practicing sporadically with us," St. Xavier coach Steve Specht said. "I'm the one who's been holding him out, not wanting to rush him back into the lineup."
