CARMEL, Ind. -- One reason ESPN chose to televise Saturday's Cathedral-Carmel high school football game was the star power of Carmel senior quarterback Morgan Newton.
In the first half, it looked as if Cathedral junior quarterback Kofi Hughes would steal the spotlight.
The Class 5A No. 1 Greyhounds, led by Newton, rebounded to score the game's final three touchdowns and top 4A No. 1 Cathedral 28-21 in a season opener before an estimated crowd of 8,000.
"They made some big plays in the first half, but in the end we made more plays," Newton said.
Hughes, in his varsity debut, threw a 33-yard touchdown pass and ran 68 yards for another score to help Cathedral grab a 21-7 lead in the first half. Newton tossed a 4-yard touchdown pass to narrow the deficit to 21-14 at halftime.
Newton scored on a 2-yard touchdown run, and a Zach Broadbent kick tied the score with 11:24 left in the fourth quarter. Newton followed that by scoring from 18 yards out with 5:40 left, giving the Greyhounds a 27-21 lead. Ryan Rhoades' kick made it 28-21.
Newton, who announced Thursday he plans to play for Kentucky next season, completed 16-of-21 passes for 194 yards and ran for 89 yards on 20 carries.

University of Kentucky commitment Morgan Newton had a huge night on Friday as Carmel (Ind.) edged Center Grove 33-32 in a battle of Indiana powers.
Newton ran 28 times for 233 yards and two touchdowns, while he also completed 12 of 18 passes for 136 yards and another TD.
But Newton fumbled with 33 seconds left, only to watch his teammate - wide receiver Nick Logan - pick it up and race eight yards for the score.
Newton then hit Eric Ardaiolo on the two-point conversion to seal the victory in the game.

Morgan Newton knows he's not close to the finish line.
As a quarterback, he has a long way to go before he can be considered a finished product. His coach at Carmel says the senior can improve his passing accuracy, speed up his release, make quicker decisions and clean up his footwork.
Newton knows this, and that's what makes him so scary. Despite his relative rawness, he is the most dangerous player in the state. At 6-foot-4 and 217 pounds, Newton possesses 4.5 speed in the 40-yard dash and as strong an arm as anyone in the area can remember.
"Physically, there's nothing that can hold him back," Carmel head coach Mo Moriarity says. "He's a freak athlete. He can throw the ball as far as anybody I've seen, and he's got the speed to run it. As far as athleticism, he's probably as good as I've ever had. And I'd be surprised if there's another 17-year-old as athletic as him anywhere."
