Jason Semmes had three major college scholarship offers at the beginning of last week. Then all of the sudden he had three Big Ten schools scrambling to bring him in for an official visit.

For Iowa, it was a good thing the Hawkeyes were first in line.

Semmes, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound defensive end prospect from Orchard Lake St. Mary's High School in suburban Detroit, verbally committed to Iowa, picking the Hawkeyes over scholarship offers from Air Force, Buffalo and Toledo and increasing interest from Purdue and Michigan State.

"It got pretty intense the last week here," Semmes said. "I was waiting and waiting and waiting, and I didn't know what was going to happen. It's nice not to have to worry about that anymore."
