'10 IA ATH A.J. Derby (Official Offer)

'10 IA ATH A.J. Derby

Athlete
Iowa City (IA) Iowa City

Ht: 6-foot-4
Wt: 215 lbs
Class: 2010 (High School)

Rivals (free)

9/10

Quote:
QB A.J. DERBY (6-4/215), Iowa City (Iowa) High
CLASS OF 2010
OFFERS: Cincinnati, Iowa, Wisconsin
PERFORMANCE: Passed for 154 yards and one touchdown while rushing for 105 yards and three more scores in 27-23 win over Cedar Rapids (Iowa) Washington.
STRENGTHS: A versatile player who played both ways and on every special teams unit except kickoffs. He is not afraid to just run someone over, a la Tim Tebow. Has great size; if quarterback does not work out, he would make an excellent tight end prospect.
WEAKNESSES: Raw as a quarterback; he really needs reps throwing the football. Derby missed most of the summer with an injury and was unable to throw. Also needs work on seeing the whole field, as most of his throws were to the boundary. – B.E.

Versatile Derby sorting through offers

Friday, March 6, 2009
Posted by Bill Kurelic

Quarterback A.J. Derby (Iowa City, Iowa/Iowa City) is an outstanding athlete and one of the top quarterback prospects in the Midwest. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound Derby is a key member of the Iowa City football, baseball and basketball teams.

"He's a very versatile athlete," Iowa City coach Dan Sabers said. "He has great savvy. He'll do anything you ask him to do."

On the gridiron Derby started at both wide receiver and free safety during his sophomore season. He moved to quarterback his junior season, but also played some wide receiver, free safety, returned punts and kickoffs and did his team's punting.

Derby, who threw for 1,200 yards and rushed for 1,100, has scholarship offers from Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Alabama, Stanford, Cincinnati, Kansas, Florida State and Nebraska.

"All of them offered me as a quarterback," Derby said. "I'm not close to deciding. I plan to wait and take official visits."

Derby has been to junior days at Iowa and Nebraska. He plans to go to some spring practices and games, but doesn't have anything definite set at this point.

From the Michigan site...says that Michigan has offered and has a good chance to get him...has a history with Iowa because of his brother and father attending the school...possibly will visit USC and Stanford when he works out for the Elite 11

Northwestern reaches into Ohio for LB - ESPN

Quote:
Quarterback A.J. Derby (Iowa City, Iowa), who has 15 scholarship offers, said he hasn't narrowed his list down at this point. Although, he has decided on at least two official visits.

"For sure I'll take one to Iowa and one to Florida," Derby said. "Depending on what Oklahoma does, I might take one there too."

Derby worked out at the Sooners' camp earlier this summer. He doesn't have a scholarship offer from Oklahoma, but said he was told he could be in line to receive one.

Iowa, Florida, Miami, Wisconsin, Illinois, Alabama, Stanford, Cincinnati, Kansas, Florida State and Nebraska are among the schools that Derby has offers from.

In addition to making official visits to Iowa and Florida, and possibly Oklahoma, Derby said he will likely take two other trips before selecting a college.

"I'll probably do a combination of (official) visits during the season and after," Derby said. "We have some Thursday games, so I can take visits on those weekends during the season."

The 6-4, 220-pound Derby threw for 1,200 yards and rushed for 1,100 during his junior season. He played wide receiver and free safety his sophomore year, but is being recruited as a quarterback.
