When the first area honor roll for boys track and field was released April 13, a few members of the Brookhaven High School boys team expressed their disappointment that DeShawn Alston's time in the 400 meters -- 50.4 seconds, good for third in the area -- was the only listing from the program.

Coach Marv Whiting reminded the Bearcats that being among the top four in April should not be their goal.

"We've been trying to mix and match and see where people fit in," Whiting said. "I'm not excited yet, but I'm getting there. I just have to remind them sometimes that track is a May and June sport. With the warmer weather, we'll be able to start running some better times."

Alston leads the way in the 400 and 200 -- his time of 22.8 in the 200 just missed the top five of the first honor roll -- Whiting also has a slew of other sprinters from which to choose.

From OhioVarsity...has been clocked at 4.36 in the 40. Got his first letter from Illinois. Favors Michigan as he has family from the area. Also a standout in track but was hampered by an injury at state.
