Rhodes is a well-rounded RB prospect with great productivity at the high school level. He lacks great size but is thickly-built, compact and pound-for-pound a strong runner. A bit top-heavy and will need to continue building up his hips and lower-body with added strength and power. Presses the hole with good initial quicks, burst and suddenness through traffic. Can move the chains with decisive in-line running strength or with deceptive perimeter speed and quickness. Sharply hits the cutback and squares up quickly out of his cuts for added power. Does a good job side-stepping and jump-cutting the initial trash without losing a lot in transition. Shifty in-line back and does give defenders a clean shot. Runs with a low center of gravity, good body control and sound vision. Very slippery to wrap up when he gets a full head of steam and keeps his legs driving on contact. While he runs through most high-arm tackles with good upper-body strength, he struggles at times breaking lower-body tackles and can get tripped up through the hole due to his upright running style. Good initial speed but is more quick than fast. A one-gear back and lacks a great extra gear when he finds a seam in the second level. Top-end speed is adequate but he is far from a burner. Overall, Rhodes is more effective as a pounder and has the body structure to handle that role at the next level. Good hands out of the backfield add to his upside as a featured back.
Rhodes gets offers from UNC, Illinois :: WRAL.com

Just days after receiving offers from Akron and Buffalo, two major BCS schools offered Durham Jordan's J.R. Rhodes football scholarships.

One county away from Rhodes' high school, head football coach Butch Davis and his North Carolina Tar Heel staff saw something they liked.

According to Jordan assistant football coach Jason Luck, Rhodes has received an offer from the Heels on Saturday after attending the UNC camp.

Rhodes also received an offer from Illinois on Tuesday morning. According to Luck, the Illini had been looking at Rhodes for "some time."

The two offers bring the rising senior's count to five Division-IA offers, four coming in the last two weeks. The other D-IA offer is from Ball State.

The 5-foot-10 running back also has two offers from D-IAA schools, Western Carolina and Presbyterian.

Rhodes' forty time at the Shrine Bowl Combine was 4.48, and his shuttle time was 4.38. The 195-pounder also recorded 17 bench reps and a 38 inch vertical.

From the UNC site...has offers from Illinois, UNC, ECU, Akron, Presbyterian, Ball State and a few other small schools. Talks about getting the offer from UNC and says he has not been to Illinois and doesn't know much about the program. Wants to major in engineering and could announce a decision this summer.

Jerrell Rhodes has been openly stating his intentions to accept a scholarship offer from North Carolina since June. He finally made it official Monday evening.

The Durham running back telephoned the UNC coaching staff and made a his long-awaited oral commitment. Rhodes selected the Tar Heels after also considering scholarship offers from Akron, Ball State, Buffalo, East Carolina and Illinois.

The 5-foot-9, 195-pounder said he waited to commit so he could discuss North Carolina with his entire family.

“Last weekend was the first weekend me and my family could get together and talk about my decision,’’ Rhodes said. “I knew I wanted to go to Carolina, but I wanted their support. They really didn’t know that much about Carolina.

“My mom was more concerned about me getting a degree. They have a great business program there and that’s what I want to major in. So we talked about all those things and decided.

“I called the (UNC) coaches to tell them. I talked to (head coach) Butch Davis. He said they were excited and happy to have me as part of their family.’’
