IlliniHQ.com: Monday: Recruiting blog
Quote:
Illinois coach Ron Zook received a verbal commitment from St. Augustine (Fla.) defensive end/linebacker Darryl Lee this weekend. According to ESPN.com, Lee chose the Illini over South Carolina, West Virginia, Louisville, Kentucky and Indiana.
Lee, the 14th verbal commitment for Illinois, will play linebacker for the Illini. As the first prep senior linebacker to commit to Illinois, Lee fills a void in Zook's Class of 2009. With three senior linebackers on the roster (Brit Miller, Sam Carson and Rodney Pittman), Lee could give the Illini much-needed depth.
Lee boasts great speed (4.52-second 40-yard dash) and athleticism (34-inch vertical). Lee is the second Florida prospect to commit to the Illini, joining Tallahassee offensive lienman Andrew Carter.

Quote:
Lee signed with Georgia Military College, although he's hoping to never set foot on campus.
He committed to Illinois prior to the season but hasn't received his qualifying score on the ACT test yet. Lee said Illini coach Ron Zook came to visit him last Thursday, and promised to hold his scholarship until the fall. All Lee has to do is boost his test score to qualify, and he could be enrolled at the Big Ten program by June.
"That made me feel good, they believed in me," Lee said of the visit from Zook.
If he doesn't get the scores to qualify, Lee will play at Georgia Military and then go to Illinois in two years, making Wednesday's signing a safety net. At 6-foot-2, 210 pounds, Lee is projected as an outside linebacker in college. If he lands at Illinois, it will mean St. Augustine has placed at least one player at the highest level of college football for five consecutive years.
