ESPN - Five prospects vie for No. 1 spot in ESPN 150 - Football Recruiting

Quote:
The initial ESPN 150 for football's Class of 2009 will be released in one week (on Aug. 5). And while the Scouts Inc. crew -- Craig Haubert, Billy Tucker, Bill Conley and I -- bunker down in Charlotte to review, debate and compile the rankings, we thought we would whet your appetite with the five outstanding prospects who could be No. 1.

Keep in mind that of the players we have graded and written reports on so far -- almost 2,000 prospects -- those who have graded out the highest to this point are all candidates. We are performing the final analysis as to who is going to make the cut for the entire ESPN 150, and it is safe to say the following not only have a case for the top 10 or top five but also for the No. 1 slot.

Based on junior film and the spring and summer evaluation period, we've made a case for and against each prospect's claim to the top spot. As always, grades and evaluations will certainly change between now and Aug. 5. The players below are in no particular order (other than alphabetical), so try not to read anything into the order in which they are presented.

Continued...
The five are Matt Barkley, Dre Kirkpatrick, Aaron Murray, Russell Shepard and Manti Te'o...

ESPN seems to be awfully high on Aaron Murray. Not saying he's not good, but there are certainly other QBs that may merit being the 2nd best QB in the country over him.

ESPN - Two QBs, Shepard top ESPNU 150 - Football Recruiting

Quote:
It's that time of year again! The first edition of the ESPNU 150 for 2009 has been revealed. It's sure to hold some surprises, maybe even some shockers, but also some reality checks in terms of hype, overhype or even a lack of hype for some prospects.

If you have kept up with our content over the past three months or so, you know we have closely scrutinized the quarterback position -- including guys who are considered dual threats who may move to another position. With ESPN's acquisition of the Nike Football Training Camps and the Elite 11, we have been more "up close and personal" in our spring evaluation period than ever before. Based on the gathered information, it became clear to us that QB Matt Barkley (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei), ATH/QB Russell Shepard (Houston/Cy-Ridge) and QB Aaron Murray (Tampa, Fla./Plant Senior) are a cut above and thus captured the top three spots of the first edition of the 2009 ESPNU 150.

Muck Recruit
I've been posting a composite rankings list over on BP using the various national recruiting sites. The idea being to create a consensus list that minimizes the oddball choices from any single source.

Since the last of the big ones has released their rankings (ESPN) I figured it was time to go ahead and post it over here as well.

I've been using the following criteria:

Each player who is ranked gets points based upon his ranking and the total number of players ranked by that service. For a player ranked #1 overall would receive 250 pts (Rivals' ranks players out to #250) while a player ranked #250 would receive 1pt. Likewise players ranked #1 & #150 on ESPN (which ranks to 150) would receive 150 & 1 pt respectively.

I also give a bonus to each ranked player equal to 20% of the total numbers of players by said service. So a player ranked on Rivals receives 50 (20% of 250) bonus pts while one ranked on ESPN receives 30 (20% of 150) bonus pts.

The bonus points are to help keep a player who is ranked very highly by only a single service (and not at all by the others) from being ranked over a player who is ranked by every service but near the bottom of their list. Essentially the bonus pts reward consistency and help eliminate flyers.

Sources used (numbers in parenthesis are number of players ranked):
Scout (300)
Emfinger (270 or so - Max has some duplicates I had to clean up)
Rivals (250)
N2FL (250)
ESPN (150)
FVSports (100)
CSTV - Lemming/Hodges (100)
Offense-Defense (100)
PrepStar (100)
Rise (25)

(FVSports should be expanding their list out to 250 soon, likewise Rise Magazine will expand theirs to 100. TAKKLE/Sports Illustrated will also be releasing a Top 100 list. I will include them once they are updated)

Current Composite Top 250 list (Big 10 Commitments highlighted):

1 Matt Barkley QB 6'3” 226 USC
