IN THE HUDDLE 2009: Willie Haulstead

Each year, the state of Florida produces as many quality football players than any state in the nation. Top-flight talent emerges from the start of the off season all the way to the end of the year.

While picking out some of the emerging stars is often a challenge, there are athletes who simply jump out at you as prospects that everyone is looking at. Haulstead is one of those tremendous talents.

Today, IN THE HUDDLE takes you to the Space Coast, where talent has been showcased for many years.

IN THE HUDDLE has taken you to practice sessions in Baldwin, pre-game workouts in Cross City, and camps and combines from Monticello to the Titusville area where Haulstead has already made an impact as one of the top prospects in the Class of 2009.

THE HAULSTEAD REPORT
NAME: Willie Haulstead
SCHOOL: Titusville
CITY: Titusville
POSITION: WR
HEIGHT: 6-3
WEIGHT: 200
40 TIME: 4.57 (Reported)
HEAD COACH: Bobby Guthrie

SCOUTING HAULSTEAD: Turned out to be a real surprise as a junior. This is an exception talent who has the frame and athketic ability to play either receiver or safety at the next level.

His basketball and track experience has been essential in his development, and after watching him play, you have to be impressed at the way he uses his body control on every reception. A strong young man who has the opportunity to play this game at a high level.

While he is still developing as a blocker, this past year certainly illustrated what he brings to the table as football player. He often creates mismatches because of his size and speed.

As we watch him more in the off season and into his final season, there are so many other positives that we ill discover. This is certainly a talent that people across the nation will continue to hear about.

HAULSTEAD HYPE: Will be a three year starter for the Terriers in the fall. His play on the defensive side of the ball, as a safety, was overshdowed this past season by his impressive work on offense where this track speed helped him lead Brevard County in receiving with 44 catches for 635 yards and 13 touchdowns.

He is also a tremendous basketball player who plays hard on defense as well as being a very good shooter.

WHAT THE COLLEGE RECRUITERS ARE SAYING: "One of the top prospects in the state, this is a player every college will be after because of his speed, athletic ability and durability. Quality football player who is going to reeceive more and more attention during the off season."

HIS BAGS ARE PACKED: While the process is just starting, look for Florida, Florida State, Miami, UCF and USF to all be in there from the start.

Bobby Guthrie knows they are coming, and will hit this area well before hurricane season.

Recruiters. Lots and lots of recruiters. All asking about Titusville High junior wideout Willie Haulstead.

To date, Guthrie, the Terriers' head coach, has just received a sampling concerning the 6-foot-3, 215-pound prospect.

"He's keeping me busy," Guthrie said. "The bad time hasn't hit yet."

"Bad" as in a seemingly ceaseless barrage of inquiries from coaches, and scheduled visits to Titusville for assistant coaches to watch the speedy Haulstead. This early in the process, Haulstead has received scholarship offers from, among others, Florida State, South Carolina, Central Florida, Florida Atlantic and Florida International. Among those that have at least recently called about Haulstead are Florida, West Virginia, Michigan and Georgia.

"He is pretty much (academically) qualified now," Guthrie said.

Yet another reason why Guthrie's phone will chirp all spring.

FSU, Auburn, USF, UCF, FIU, BC, and South Carolina have offered. Most interested in BC, and LSU/Florida/Georgia if they offer.

The Sunshine State is fertile recruiting ground for receivers and USC is pursuing another one it likes in Willie Haulstead (6-3 200) of Titusville. USC has offered along with Florida State, Purdue, Central Florida, South Florida, Auburn and Boston College. He's also getting interest from LSU and Georgia. "I'm interested in South Carolina a lot," Haulstead said. "They throw the ball and I like how they use their receivers." Haulstead said the Gamecocks are showing strong interest and he talks with his recruiter about once a week. He said his top five are USC, LSU, Georgia, Miami and Florida with LSU the favorite. "They won the National Championship and they are losing receivers," Haulstead said. And he thinks LSU will offer. He plans to visit LSU and Georgia over the summer. Last season Haulstead had 44 catches for 864 yards and 13 touchdowns.

From the UM site. Though he is still committed to FSU, Willie is still looking around and Michigan is a team of great interest. He plans to visit Michigan, South Carolina, Auburn and Florida State again, and names a top five (in order) of FSU, Georgia, Michigan, South Carolina and Auburn. Distance won't be an issue.

WR Willie Haulstead (6-3 200) of Titusville, FL has an offer from USC and has them in his top five. His other offers are from FSU, Central Florida, South Florida, Auburn, and Boston College. He says that UCF, FSU, and Miami have shown him the most interest lately. He still plans to take an official visit to Columbia and his still receiving correspondance from the Gamecocks. This summer he attended a passing camp in Myrtle Beach and made the all-star team. He will return in January for the Offense/Defense All-Star game. It was his first trip to the Palmetto State and he had a good experience. Haulstead also plays defensive back and says he would prefer to play on the defensive side of the ball in college. "I prefer playing cornerback but I'm being recruited as a wide receiver. That's probably where I'll play in college. " His top five schools are USC, LSU, Georgia, Miami, and Florida. He did not list a favorite. Haulstead runs a 4.4 40 and says the last time he was timed he ran a 4.35.
