Find that funny that you'd say that. Real funny.
You do realize that before Michigan came calling and offered to let John Navarre play QB he was committed to Northwestern to play
Defensive End, right? Navarre was a lightly regarded prospect that completed 58% of his passes and threw for only 950 yards and 7 touchdown passes (and 5 interceptions) as a senior in high school for Cudahy High playing on the prep fields of Cudahy, Wisconsin. Real tough competition he went up against there, right! Navarre barely completed over 52% of his passes for his career in high school. He was only offered because Michigan was
desperate for QB depth. John turned out to be a decent player, but he was terribly inaccurate at times, and only completed 55.9% of his passes for his career and never completed 60% of his passes in any season. His best completion percentage came when he was as a senior, when he completed 59.2% of his passes.
Mallett on the other hand played in Texas 4A with a few 5A teams on his schedule every year (including a thrilling showdown against Matt Stafford's Highland Park team) mixed in with match-ups from a few of the top high school football programs around the nation, including games against high school teams from Louisiana, Arkansas, and Ohio. Mallett played against some of the best competition in high school and put up excellent numbers, and he improved year to year. As a junior at Texas High Mallett completed 61% of his passes while throwing for 2,200+ yards and 21 touchdown passes with 6 interceptions. Mallett improved across the board as a senior, completing 66% of his passes and throwing for 3,300+ yards and 31 touchdowns with 5 interceptions. Mallett had offers from everybody, was an Elite 11 QB selection, and ranked by all three of the major recruiting services (Scout, Rivals, Lemming) as a Top 5 player in the nation regardless of position.
If Scott Loeffler could take a kid that nobody wanted to play QB and turn him into a decent QB, just imagine what he'll be able to do with Ryan Mallett. Mallett also doesn't have the biggest problem Navarre had when he came to Michigan,
TERRIBLE mechanics. Despite being 6'6" Navarre had more balls batted down than a 5'11" Drew Tate at Iowa did. I saw Mallett sling the ball at Michigan's "spring game", and his mechanics are flawless. Mallett has a very high release point and a lightning quick release. He flicks his wrist and the ball flies out of his hand with incredible velocity. He doesn't over-stride, drop his elbow, carry the ball at his shoulder, wind-up, have an incredibly low release point for such a tall QB, or short-arm a long ball all like Navarre used to. Mallett has better mechanics as a true freshman than Navarre did as a 5th year senior, and that is what makes him a more accurate thrower as a freshman than Navarre was as a senior.
