The Big 10 Network

I'm sure people are not going to be short on an opinion when it comes to this topic..

Big Ten Network takes battle to public

The Big Ten Network is coming.

Whether it appears on your TV remains to be seen. But that hasn't slowed the network from getting the word out.

Beginning July 9, the BTN jumped heavily into Big Ten territory, aggressively marketing the network to 29 cities and regions -- including Detroit, Flint, Saginaw, Grand Rapids, Traverse City and Lansing.

Full-page ads boosting Michigan and Michigan State ran in the Free Press last week, and radio and TV spots have emerged loudly, as well. Billboards are in the works for the coming months.

The ongoing battle to secure distribution, however -- which has become a public battle between the BTN and Comcast -- continues behind closed doors while the ad campaign is out in the open.

The timing seems interesting given the recent war of words, but BTN officials insist the July campaign launch was scheduled months ago. "It was always planned," BTN vice president of communications Elizabeth Conlisk said. "The ad campaign is really our opportunity to brand the network."

It's also an opportunity to stir the fan base onto the BTN's negotiating side. Each television and print ad clearly features a phone number to call to request the network from your cable provider.

BTN has lined up one significant carrier in DirecTV.

The strategy from the Chicago-based advertising firm of Tom, Dick and Harry is to play on each school's tradition instead of focusing on a specific player, moment or memory.

Michigan State's print ad involves guarding the Sparty mascot on campus before the Michigan game. U-M's is about the massive size of Michigan Stadium. Wisconsin's is about students jumping to begin the fourth quarter, while the Purdue ad touts the "World's Largest Drum."

The network launch comes Aug. 30, but clearly the network push is in full swing.

DirecTv is also supposed to be adding it as an HD channel when they launch their expanded HD channels around September. Should be sweet.

Big Ten should seek big names for expansion

Remember when the Big Ten was an athletic conference and not a cable TV network?
In those days, the only addition the league was rumored to be considering was Notre Dame. When Penn State came on board, it almost felt as if someone had added an Eleventh Commandment.
Now, though, the Big Ten Network is on the prowl. Commissioner Jim Delaney told the Des Moines Register last week that the birth of the network would mean expansion talks are on the way.
"The broader (the network) is distributed, the more value (expansion) has," Delaney said. "We have eight states. With expansion, you could have nine."
And to think Delaney wasn't even a math major.

Big Ten starting blitz for network

By Kyle Nagel
Staff Writer

Monday, July 30, 2007
As busy as Big Ten Conference officials have been promoting the new Big Ten Network this summer, there's plenty more coming in the next three days.
National reporters will converge in Chicago for the Big Ten football media days this week, and plenty of time has been scheduled for commissioner Jim Delany and Big Ten Network president Mark Silverman to discuss the all-day, year-round channel that launches Aug. 30 despite contentious (and unresolved) negotiations this summer with many cable providers. Here are some things to watch for:

Six IU games in TV limbo

BY CHRIS KORMAN
August 15, 2007

BLOOMINGTON — Indiana men’s basketball season ticket holders will see as many games at Assembly Hall — 19 — as they’ve ever been able to see.

Fans watching from home, though, may end up seeing fewer games on television than they’re accustomed to.

Indiana released the 2007-08 basketball schedule Tuesday, and it includes six conference games that will be broadcast exclusively on the Big Ten Network. The startup channel has yet to find a cable carrier in most Big Ten markets, including Bloomington.

The Big Ten Network, a new channel dedicated exclusively to Big Ten athletic and academic coverage, will kick-off on Aug. 30. This groundbreaking venture will not only give Indiana University fans unprecedented access to Hoosier sports, but will also allow IU and the other member schools to showcase off-the-field achievements.

When the Hoosiers aren't being shown on national television, you can turn to the Big Ten Network to catch virtually all of their other games.

Fearful that the Big Ten Network is telling a one-sided story about ongoing negotiations between itself and cable operators, Comcast Corp. is beefing up its public response.

The Big Ten Network, set to debut Aug. 30 with sports programming exclusive to the midwestern collegiate conference, demands that cable operators include it on basic cable packages.
