Oklahoma forced by NCAA to forfeit 2005 season

ESPN link

Jist of it:

OU are being forced to forfeit the 2005 season and they are also being docked 2 scholarships in '09 and in '10. Stoops' career record will also be amended to reflect the vacated wins, dropping it from 86-19 in eight seasons to 78-19. OU also will have two years of probation added to an earlier penalty, extending the Sooners' probation to May 23, 2010.

Gee, why am I not surprised in the least bit? In my opinion OU is getting off lightly. Bomar took 20 g's, Peterson was given a free Lexus to drive around, many other players took free handouts, they just weren't as high profile as the starting QB or the Heisman trophy runner-up RB. I actually know somebody that went to OU and is good friends with former Sooner linebacker Teddy Lehman. The things this guy told me about OU, oh man I was shocked that something like this didn't happen 4-5 years ago.

Wonder how this will affect their recruiting?

Likely won't... You'll get some negative recruiting against them, but it won't ultimately hurt since they don't have a post season ban and large loss of scholarships...

True, but some of those star commits they have right now are from Texas and are kids that Texas really wanted. Wouldn't surprise me to see Mack try and use this to get some of those kids to come back his way.

I'm really just at a loss for words as to how they didn't get a more severe punishment. I mean Colorado and Alabama got more severe punishments than this. OU also has a history of stuff like this and worse in regards to their football program.

I think if the NCAA wasn't going to ban them in post-season play like they should've then the least they could do is take 12 scholarships away in '09 and '10 instead of two. That way even if they don't want to ban them from post-season play they are pretty much assuring that OU won't make it to post-season play in '11-'13.

I agree. Sort of a mini-death penalty that wouldn't entirely cripple the program. As it is, the games fom that season have already been played and it amounts to little more than a slap on the hand.
