Anytime is the right time for hoops.

So when most folks were enjoying their Saturday, the U. rolled up to Calihan Hall to check out Detroit Mercy’s team basketball camp.

So the U. met up with a Jr. U. (Freep apprentice Mike Horan), and we checked out the action as some of top high school basketball teams around came together for a little comp.

The U. quickly noticed Detroit Renaissance senior point guard Delano Collins basically getting to the basket anytime he felt like it.

And we quickly thought Collins is probably one of the few top football players (Spartanmag.com ranks him No. 24 in the talent-rich state in the 2009 class) actually taking part in a basketball camp this time of year.

And he has no idea what he is going to do when he has to make up his mind during the coming school year.

“I mean, it’s just real confusing right now since I love both sports,” he said. “I don’t really know which one yet. I guess I will have to do what’s best for me at that time.”

Detroit (Mich.) Renaissance has two Michigan State commitments in linebacker Chris Norman and wide receiver/defensive back Dana Dixon, and if the duo have anything to say about it, soon there will be three. Their teammate Delano Collins scored four touchdowns against Detroit Finney on Friday. The first on a 36-yard touchdown catch, followed by a 62-yard punt return, a 90-yard kickoff return and a 75-yard interception return for a score. Afterwards, Collins said MSU is taking a long look at him in addition to Kansas State, Iowa and Missouri.

Delano Collins found ways to produce points from all facets of the game. The senior wide receiver/free safety caught a touchdown (36 yards), returned a punt (62 yards) and kickoff (90 yards) for scores and scored on an interception (75 yards) in Renaissance's 27-14 victory over Finney. Collins has scored nine touchdowns in five games, including six on receptions.

Collins scored on a 36-yard reception, a 62-yard punt return, a 90-yard kickoff return and a 75-yard interception return for the Phoenix (3-2, 1-1 PSL II). "I had a talk with him earlier in the week about some dropped passes in previous games," said Renaissance coach Antonio Watts. "And I told him that for him to be my horse you have to make plays." Renaissance linebacker Christian Norman finished with 14 tackles and a sack. Detroit Finney is 1-4, 0-2.
