Nice sized player who can play a variety of positions. Projects best to defensive back. Shows good awareness and instincts. Reads run and attacks it quickly and is a sure tackler. Has solid ball skills and can go up and get the ball. Must improve technique as he is still relatively inexperienced at cornerback.

From the MSU site. Collins says most of the schools are recruiting him at safety, and that he is hearing the most from Cincinnati and Michigan State.

Recruit U: Hoops or football? That's Collins' dilemma | Freep.com | Detroit Free Press

Quote:
By VINCE ELLIS • RECRUIT U. • June 22, 2008

Anytime is the right time for hoops.

So when most folks were enjoying their Saturday, the U. rolled up to Calihan Hall to check out Detroit Mercy’s team basketball camp.

So the U. met up with a Jr. U. (Freep apprentice Mike Horan), and we checked out the action as some of top high school basketball teams around came together for a little comp.

The U. quickly noticed Detroit Renaissance senior point guard Delano Collins basically getting to the basket anytime he felt like it.

And we quickly thought Collins is probably one of the few top football players (Spartanmag.com ranks him No. 24 in the talent-rich state in the 2009 class) actually taking part in a basketball camp this time of year.

And he has no idea what he is going to do when he has to make up his mind during the coming school year.

“I mean, it’s just real confusing right now since I love both sports,” he said. “I don’t really know which one yet. I guess I will have to do what’s best for me at that time.”

Detroit (Mich.) Renaissance has two Michigan State commitments in linebacker Chris Norman and wide receiver/defensive back Dana Dixon, and if the duo have anything to say about it, soon there will be three. Their teammate Delano Collins scored four touchdowns against Detroit Finney on Friday. The first on a 36-yard touchdown catch, followed by a 62-yard punt return, a 90-yard kickoff return and a 75-yard interception return for a score. Afterwards, Collins said MSU is taking a long look at him in addition to Kansas State, Iowa and Missouri.
