Offers mount for Henry County junior

The scholarship offers are beginning to roll in for Henry County junior receiver Jamal Patterson.

The 6-foot-2, 190-pound Patterson has offers from Central Florida, North Carolina, Troy, Purdue and South Carolina.

He’s hoping to add offers from Georgia and Georgia Tech to his recruiting portfolio.

“I get mail from Tech and Georgia everyday,” Patterson said.

On Tech: “It’s in the city and near home,” he said. “It’d be special to have a degree from Georgia Tech. I still haven’t talked to coach [Paul] Johnson.

On Georgia: “They’ve invited me to Georgia junior day,” he said. “I love everything about Athens. I love the city, the team and the program. I know some players who have committed there and some players on the team. It would be amazing to get an offer from Georgia.”

Gators and Wildcats offer Henry County junior receiver | Football recruiting | ajc.com

Quote:
Henry County junior Jamal Patterson picked up scholarship offers from Florida and Kentucky earlier today.

The 6-foot-3, 200-pound receiver was offered by Wake Forest on Saturday during junior day activities in Winston-Salem, N.C.

He already had offers from Army, Clemson, Indiana, Purdue, Stanford and Troy.

“Things are looking good right now,” Patterson said Monday evening. “A lot of coaches have been coming in and getting a copy of my highlight tape and a copy of my transcript from my counselor.”

More offers will likely arrive in the weeks to come.

“Georgia is interested,” Patterson said. “[Georgia defensive coordinator] coach [Willie] Martinez has come by. I think they’ll offer. Southern Cal has been in touch with my coach, and Auburn has been by.”

As for Georgia Tech, receivers aren’t in major demand in coach Paul Johnson’s run-oriented offense.

“Georgia Tech was recruiting me heavily when coach [Chan] Gailey was there,” Patterson said. “But now they run the triple-option, so I don’t hear from them as much.”

Patterson, who plans to attend junior day at Central Florida on Saturday, appears to be in no hurry to commit.

“I have no favorites; it’s fair game for everyone,” he said. “I’ll weigh my options out. I’ll probably just wait so I can get the experience of going to all the camps of schools that interest me.”

Offers pour in for Henry County's Patterson | Football recruiting | ajc.com

Quote:
Henry County receiver Jamal Patterson collected his 22nd scholarship offer on Thursday when a Big 10 program threw its hat in the ring in the recruiting scramble for the talented junior.

“I got an offer from Minnesota today,” Patterson said Thursday evening. “And Tennessee offered me on Sunday.”

Patterson, who attended junior day at Tennessee last weekend, will get a taste of more orange this weekend when he visits Clemson on Saturday.

“Clemson is high on my list,” he said. “It’s only about 1 hour, 40 minutes away. I’ve been looking at their position chart and I know I’d have a good chance to play there.”

The 6-foot-2, 190-pound receiver was impressed with his recent stay in Knoxville.

“Tennessee is football town USA,” he said. “It’s amazing up there. They have a great facility and an academic program that Peyton Manning donated a lot to.”

One of Patterson’s offers is from Florida. He plans to visit Gainesville on Apr. 12.

“I’m interested in Florida big time,” he said.

Patterson does not hold an offer from Georgia. But he still plans to attend junior day in Athens on Mar. 22.

“I’m interested in Georgia a lot,” Patterson said. “It’d be good if an offer comes, but if it doesn’t I have other options.”

Patterson Gets First Look At Clemson
By Phil Kornblut

WR Jamal Patterson (6-3 200) of McDonough, GA and his father spent much of Saturday at Clemson for an unofficial visit. "It was great there," Patterson said. "I got a look at their spring practice. People think they are just a running team but they are not. They throw the ball. I got to talk to coach West, Coach Napier, coach Spence and coach Swinney. My father and I were able to have a sit down in coach Bowden's office for about 45 minutes to an hour. That was my first time going to Clemson. They toured us around the campus, the dorms, the academic center, the weight room." Patterson has 23 offers including Clemson, USC, Tennessee, North Carolina, Auburn, Alabama, Stanford, Florida and Florida State. He has been to junior days at USC, Wake Forest and Tennessee and plans to visit Georgia in two weeks. And he plans to go to spring games at Clemson, Alabama and Wake Forest. Patterson said he hasn't heard from USC recruiter Robert Gillespie since the junior day but he plans to call him this week. He does not have a favorite.

Henry County's Patterson to visit UGA on Saturday | Football recruiting | ajc.com

Quote:
Henry County junior Jamal Patterson is quickly becoming one of the most coveted receivers in the nation.

Scholarship offers from Auburn, Florida State and Maryland has pushed his overall haul to 30, as of late Wednesday.

“It’s great knowing that all these schools want me, but at the same time I know I can’t stop working,” said Patterson, who is the middle of track season at Henry County.

Patterson, who is regarded as the 32nd-best receiver in the nation by scout.com, already has held offers from programs such as Alabama, Clemson, Florida, South Carolina and Tennessee for several weeks.

Oddly enough, Georgia and Georgia Tech have yet to follow suit.

Tech’s new run oriented scheme likely isn’t a good fit for Patterson’s ability to run deep pass patterns.

“I had been hearing a lot from Tech when coach [Chan] Gailey was there,” Patterson said.

But an offer from the Dogs could come this weekend when Patterson attends junior day in Athens on Saturday.

“It’s not really an actual junior day,” Patterson said. “It’s just a few players that they’ve invited and is more of a project testing for them.”

Does Patterson believe the Dogs will offer?

“There’s no telling,” he said. “I’m not even sure right now. But yeah, it would really be nice if they do offer.”

With spring football practice set to begin on the second Monday in May, Patterson’s schedule over the upcoming weeks will continue to remain hectic.

“I will be going to South Carolina’s spring game, the spring game at Wake Forest, Central Florida and Georgia’s spring game,” he said. “And I’m going to try to make it to Clemson’s spring game as well.”

Georgia avoids recruiting violation | Football recruiting | ajc.com

Quote:
With the threat of an NCAA rules violation hanging in the balance, Georgia coaches told Henry County receiver Jamal Patterson to skip Saturday’s junior day.

When Georgia coaches learned late last week that Patterson was scheduled to participate in a Georgia High School Association-sanctioned track meet and attend junior day in Athens on Mar. 22, they told the junior to delay his visit until early April.

“[Georgia defensive coordinator] coach Willie Martinez called and said a player can’t participate in an athletic activity and attend a junior day on the same day,” Patterson said. “So he wants me to be there on April 5 for the spring game.”

Patterson’s scholarship haul climbed to 32 over the weekend when offers from Middle Tennessee State and Rutgers arrived. He already had offers from powerhouses such as Alabama, Clemson, Florida, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Patterson had hoped to learn over the weekend if Georgia will jump on the bandwagon and extend an offer. Now he must wait nearly two weeks to gauge the Dogs’ interest.

“Coach Martinez did say there is some good news, but he wants me to wait and talk to [offensive coordinator] coach [Mike] Bobo and [wide receivers] coach [John] Eason at the spring game.”

Ironically, Patterson is scheduled to be in Athens on Saturday. He has been invited to participate in the Rivals 5-star combine.

April will be a busy month for Patterson. After visiting Georgia on Apr. 6, he will trek to Florida on the 12th before visiting South Carolina the following weekend.

WR Jamal Patterson (6-3 200) of McDonough, GA was at USC's spring game Saturday and kept a close eye on the receivers. "I loved it up there," Patterson said. "South Carolina throws the ball a lot so their offense caught my eye big time. The routes they run, the alignment and the assignments caught my eye. I talked to coach Gillespie, coach Spurrier Jr. and coach Spurrier. They tell me they want me up their bad. They love my physical play, the way I can go up and get the ball in traffic. They say the need receivers who can come in and play immediately." Patterson also went to Florida's spring game. He is now running track and will attend a couple of football combines in the coming weeks. He now has 36 offers with the newest ones being Arkansas, Duke, Auburn and Western Michigan. Clemson also is in the picture and Patterson feels USC and Clemson will be among his final schools when he narrows his list. Last Thursday he said he talked with Clemson head coach Tommy Bowden and assistants Ron West, Dabo Swinney and Billy Napier. "They said with Aaron Kelly and Tyler Gresham leaving they will need receivers who can come in and play," Patterson said.

Henry County receiver nabs offer from Georgia Tech | College recruiting | ajc.com

Quote:
After receiving scholarship offers from nearly every national power throughout the country, Henry County receiver Jamal Patterson finally received some love earlier today from one of the two major colleges in his home state.

“I got an offer from Georgia Tech today,” Patterson said shortly after 7:30 p.m.

Patterson, whose recruiting portfolio features offers from the likes of Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, LSU, South Carolina, and, as of Monday, Oregon, seemed pessimistic when asked if scholarship-strapped Georgia will also offer.

“I haven’t heard too much from Georgia,” he said.

As for Tech, Patterson is taking a wait-and-see attitude on how often first-year coach Paul Johnson will throw out of his run-oriented offense.

“[Tech linebackers] coach Brian Jean-Mary is a real nice guy,” Patterson said. “I like him a lot.

“He’s tried to tell me how their offense is ran. Our team went there for their spring game, but I wasn’t able to make it.

“I’d like to watch them actually play this year. I know I’ll watch a lot of teams, including Tech.”

Patterson seems intent on keeping his word by evaluating several teams this fall before making a commitment.

“I don’t think I’ll commit anytime soon,” he said.

Patterson, who is scheduled to participate in a region track meet beginning Monday, will participate in the Southeastern All American combine at Auburn on Sunday.

He’ll travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala. on May 3rd for a combine hosted by Rivals.com.
