Brigham Young '10 WA QB Jake Heaps (BYU Verbal)

'10 WA QB Jake Heaps

Pro-style quarterback
Sammamish (WA) Skyline

Ht: 6-foot-2
Wt: 185 lbs
Class: 2010 (High School)

Tribune Blogs -- The recruiting trail

Quote:
Jake Heaps, a 6-foot-2, 180-pound quarterback at Skyline High is Issaquah, Wash., who already has scholarship offers from BYU and Washington.

Just a sophomore, Heaps led Washington the championship at the camp, after the team started 0-2 in pool play. Washington was at a disadvantage because its coach, Steve Gervais (who was also Heaps' head coach at Skyline) took a job as Washington's running backs coach just days before the camp and was unable to coach the team in Las Vegas, per NCAA rules.

Heaps confirmed that Washington and BYU have already offered, but said he has received a lot of interest from USC, UCLA, Arizona State, Florida, Michigan and Texas.

"BYU is recruiting me pretty heavily right now," he said. "Since I am LDS, it was easy to offer me for BYU. But they said they were really intrigued by how I played, and how poised I am in the pocket for a sophomore."

Heaps led Skyline to an unbeaten record and the Washington state 3A championship last fall.

He was named to the All-Las Vegas Camp team by Scout.com.

Heaps was planning to take an unofficial visit to BYU last Thursday to watch the Cougars practice during spring camp (I'm not sure if he made it or not). He said he also plans to visit USC and UCLA this week.

"I've talked to [former BYU quarterback] Steve Sarkisian and coach [Pete] Carroll at USC for about 15 minutes," he said. "I'm also interested in talking to UCLA, with Norm Chow there."

Heaps, incredibly well-spoken for a sophomore, said he is "probably" going to go on an LDS Church mission and has told all the schools that have talked to him that he could be leaving after his freshman year.

"That's one of the first questions I get asked: ˜Are you going on a mission?'" he said. "Schools want to know. It is totally understandable."

As far as BYU goes, Heaps said he has developed a strong relationship with quarterbacks coach Brandon Doman despite the limited contact they've had.

"They have told me I am their No. 1 quarterback recruit [from the class of 2010]," he said. "They have expressed to me that they really want me down there at BYU....They say it would be a good fit for me, and they say I'm their guy. It's really flattering."

Heaps said he doesn't have a timeline for deciding in place, but wants to make a commitment before his senior season begins.

"I am going to take as long as I need," he said.

ESPN

Quote:
Jake Heaps, a Class of 2010 ESPNU 150 Watch List signal-caller told affiliate Web site OUInsider.com his what his current offers list looks like.

"I have 16 current offers at the moment. I have offers from Washington, Washington State, Oregon State, Boise State, Arizona State, Stanford, Cal, South Carolina, Nebraska, UCLA, Tennessee, Minnesota, Duke, North Carolina, Notre Dame and BYU."

The highly-coveted trigger-man doesn't have a favorite or see a quick decision in his future, "I think a lot of people have a hard time believing that I don't have any leaders at the moment. I have just been taking in everything that comes and I have been enjoying the process. I have been watching college football and evaluating things and it has been real fun to sit back and see how things are going. So I am really excited to see how this whole season turns out and I really am just starting to get into recruiting. I am not going to get to in-depth with it until I am done with my current football season."

Heaps also shared what he's looking for, "I either want to be a part of a program that either has a very good tradition, a good team or a team on the rise. I want coaches who are going to develop me into becoming a great player and a great person. My education is number one because my football career is going to end at some point and I want to have that college degree. Also does the fan base really want me and do they really want me to be a part of their program. Will I enjoy my time while I live there?"

"You have to look at the players and the people that surround you. In a perfect world who would not want to stay close to home, but at the same time being away from home isn't going to effect my decision what-so-ever. Of course I want to play in an offense that throws the ball, but has some balance, because I believe a good offense also needs a great run game."

High School Sports | State player of the year | Skyline QB Jake Heaps | Seattle Times Newspaper

Quote:
It's become a tradition at the Heaps family dinner for him to open his recruiting mail, which lately has included handwritten Christmas cards from Division I coaches. Each night, his mom files them away.

Before the season, his recruiting mail fit in a single file folder. Now it fills a whole file cabinet. He has 18 Division I scholarship offers, and the most high-profile programs such as USC and Florida often do not make offers until after they sign the current senior class. Other colleges want to see him in person before they make an offer.

Speculation has gone beyond rampant. Does Heaps want to stay close to home and try to rescue the Huskies? Is he interested in the Mormon tradition of BYU? Does the long football history of Notre Dame entice him? The answers are yes, yes and yes again. He plans on taking unofficial visits on most weekends next semester to get closer looks.

"It's going to be a fun process for me, and go out there and visit all these schools I dreamed about visiting," Heaps said.

His time is short. He wants to pick a school by the start of his senior season, and like many elite prospects, Heaps might try to graduate from Skyline a semester early and enroll in college in January 2010 to be a part of spring camp.

Heaps is devoting this offseason to getting college-ready. He has coverages to learn, techniques to fine-tune and weight to gain. He is on a more-than-4,000-calorie diet to try to put on 15 to 20 pounds before next fall.

"I don't want to go to a college and be overwhelmed physically," he said.

From the BYU site. Heaps had a great visit to BYU and bonded well with guys like Van Noy, Richard Wilson, Su' Afilo and Te'o. LSU and Colorado recently offered, and Heaps said he hopes to cut things down to 10 within the coming weeks.

From the UNC site. Heaps has named his top ten and it includes North Carolina, BYU, Cal, Colorado, LSU, Notre Dame, Oregon State, Tennessee, UCLA and Washington. He likes the system, coaching staff and style of play at each of his top schools. Distance will not be a factor.

Quote:
Heaps told Sporting News Today that he'd like to be done with the recruiting process by sometime in June. He doesn't have an exact date, but he's pretty sure he'll pick his school by that month. He also said there is a slight chance he may trim his top five of BYU, California, LSU, Tennessee and Washington down one more time so he isn't holding up coaches from recruiting other QBs.

"Coaches were trying to get me to make a decision by April, but I'll probably be done in the month of June," Heaps told SN Today. "The good thing about the schools in my top five is that I have visited them all. I didn't get the full-on tour at LSU, but I have been on the campus before, and I have gotten a good feel for it. Economic times are tough, so it's tough to fly around and see everything you want to see, but I feel confident I've seen what I've needed to see with those five."
