New Jersey defensive back Oliver picks Vols : Football Recruiting : GoVolsXtra.com
Quote:
Nyshier Oliver has committed to play football for Tennessee. The 5-foot-11, 185 pounder from St. Peter's prep in New Jersey City, N.J., told the News Sentinel on Saturday he hopes to play defensive back in college.
Oliver had approximately a dozen offers, including invites from Ohio State and Michigan.
Oliver is UT's third commitment in three days as the Vols hold their football camp this week. Running back Jarvis Giles of Gaither High School in Tampa, Fla., committed Friday. Offensive lineman Kevin Revis of Rhea County committed Thursday.
As a junior he rushed for over 1,500 yards and scored 24 touchdowns.

TB NYSHIER OLIVER (5-10/170), Jersey City (N.J.) St. Peter's Prep
FARRELL'S PLAYER OF THE WEEK
CONSIDERING: Notre Dame, Boston College, Tennessee, Rutgers, Wake Forest
PERFORMANCE: Oliver rushed for 76 yards and a touchdown on eight carries in a 35-0 shutout of Plainfield (N.J.) High in a scrimmage.
STRENGTHS: Oliver has excellent burst and is a patient runner. He has good vision and isn't afraid to run inside. He is deceptively strong and can gain extra yardage after first contact. He flashed his speed to the outside on his touchdown run. He also played defense and was solid in coverage and is a physical tackler.
WEAKNESSES: Oliver doesn't have great size and likely can't handle 20-plus carries in college, which is why some schools are looking at him as a slot receiver and others want him as a cornerback. He doesn't catch the ball too often in the St. Peter's offense, so his hands could be a question mark. - M.F

Jersey City (N.J.) St. Peters Preparatory DB Nyshier Oliver has picked Notre Dame, Scout.com reported. The 5-foot-10, 170-pound safety had originally committed to Tennessee, then changed his mind in August and reopened his recruiting.
Oliver took an official visit to Notre Dame the weekend of Sept. 12, and apparently enjoyed it. In recent weeks, he'd talked mostly about the Fighting Irish, Tennessee, Boston College, Michigan and Wake Forest.
He is Notre Dame's 15th commitment in the class of 2009, and he is rated a four-star prospect by Scout.com. As a junior, he had four interceptions, while also rushing for more than 1,400 yards and 24 touchdowns on offense.
“Just everything about the school (is what I liked),” Oliver told Scout.com. “The tradition. They’re on the rise right now and soon Notre Dame is going to be the place to be for student athletes around the country.”
