German students take to football - USATODAY.com
Quote:
Kasim Edebali had to cross several time zones and the Atlantic Ocean to fulfill his dream of playing high school football.
In Germany, few high schools have sports teams, so the 6-3, 235-pound Edebali was playing football for club teams in Hamburg and Cologne in 2005 when he introduced himself to John Lyons, who was coaching the Cologne Centurions of NFL Europe that summer.
With Lyons' help, Edebali was able to gain a scholarship with USA Football's International Student Program. Now, he's one of nine German students within the ISP, including four at Kimball Union Academy in Meriden, N.H., where Lyons is the coach. The quartet has helped the Wildcats (8-0) reach a berth in a New England Private Schools Athletic Conference (NEPSAC) Super Bowl.
Besides Edebali, Kimball Union's German starters include defensive lineman Timm Kaminski of Kiel, Reuben Austin-Schmidt, a running back from Dusseldorf; and linebacker/offensive lineman Christoff Kurzer of Berlin.
"Some of these kids come over with a pretty good understanding of football and skills," Lyons says. "Once we learned their best position, some of the techniques were new to them. For the most part, I'm amazed how quickly a player like Kasim can pick up things."
