Phifer is a productive, downhill running back prospect with a non-flashy, blue-collar feel to his game. He possesses good size. Well-built, compact frame but still has major room for physical development through his hips and lower-body. Hits the hole with authority and squares up his shoulder pads quickly out of his cuts. One-cut and go slashing-type runner who doesn't waste a lot of lateral steps finding the north-south seam. Great initial speed and downhill burst allows him slice through traffic quickly and pick up good momentum for YAC. Knives through the small creases with good shoulder lean and body control. Strong lower-body and powerful thighs allow him to break through lower arm-tackles. Keeps his legs driving on contact and finishes runs. Long strider with great initial acceleration and above average top-end speed when he breaks free in the second level. However, he does appear quicker than fast at times. Is not overly sudden through the hole with his elongated lower-body and lacks a great feel for the cutback. A bit straight-lined in the second level without great vision and elusiveness; struggles making the last defender miss in the openfield. YAC and balance are inconsistent and at times he goes down easily with solo tackles. Will need to continue bulking up and improve hips and lower-body strength to remain productive and durable with current aggressive downhill running style. Overall, Phifer shows spurts on film where he looks like a legit D-I prospect; needs to put it all together and would benefit from a big senior season.
