Hartford Public's Lawrence Picks Boston College -- Courant.com
Quote:
With five schools offering scholarships and more showing interest, Andre Lawrence knew he would have a place in a Division I football program. When it came time to choose, the Hartford Public linebacker looked at some non-football issues to help make a decision.
"I've lived in Hartford all my life," Lawrence said Saturday, "so I wanted a place that was more urban, but I also wanted one that had good academics."
Despite offers from UConn, Army, Maryland and Iowa, Lawrence found what he was looking for in Boston College and gave the Eagles coaches an oral commitment Friday.
Lawrence, who will be a senior at Hartford Public in September, had narrowed his choices to UConn and BC a few weeks ago.
"He liked UConn for its facility and because it's fairly close to home," Hartford Public coach Harry Bellucci said. "But he just felt more comfortable in [BC's] campus setting."
Said Lawrence: "Not a lot of kids from Hartford get the chance to go there. It's Boston College."
A second-team Courant All-State running back after rushing for 1,467 yards and 15 TDs in 2007, Lawrence has played almost every position on the field, and is expected to play quarterback and safety next season. Lawrence (6 feet 1, 195 pounds) said he will likely play weakside linebacker in college.
Lawrence said he was confident he won't change his mind. In fact, he said the decision will help his performance this year as the Owls try to improve on a 6-4 season.
"I'm kind of a take-charge kind of guy," he said. "Now I can just play out the season and focus on academics."
