TheDay.com - Reed Drawing Big-Time Division I Interest

Quote:
Jordan Reed, a 6-foot-4, 220-pound junior quarterback who helped guide New London to an unbeaten regular season in 2007 and a berth in the Class S state championship game, has already received a scholarship offer from Boston College, Whalers coach Jack Cochran said Thursday. Reed has also attracted serious attention from UConn, Florida and Maryland.

“Physically, Jordan's good enough to play anywhere,” Cochran said. “He's still relatively new to football — he didn't play quarterback until his freshman year — but he took a big jump last year.”

Reed has been a three-year starter for the Whalers, but elevated his status in 2007 when he completed 122 of 202 passes (60.4 percent) for 1,706 yards and 28 touchdowns. He was only intercepted twice. He also rushed for 570 yards on 73 carries (7.8 yards per carry) and eight TDs.

“He's got everything you want in an athlete,” said Cochran, who has coached numerous Division I players, including Bloomfield's Dwight Freeney, an All-Pro defensive end with the Indianapolis Colts. “He's got size, speed and a great arm, and he's serious about learning the game.

“The biggest thing with him now is his decision-making. He realizes to become a complete football player he has to study the game ... learn how to make better reads. But he's working hard. As the season went on (last year), he really stepped up for us and became more of a leader. He stayed after practice working on his mechanics with our quarterback coach (Travis Meyer), and he's working hard on his strength.”

Reed has already made unofficial visits to Boston College and UConn (he attended a Feb. 2 men's basketball game against Pittsburgh with New London teammate Anthony Schiavone and later visited the Burton Family Complex and Shenkman Training Center in Storrs), and will get even more exposure later this spring and summer.

Cochran said Reed will meet with respected national recruiting analyst Tom Lemming of CSTV in April, take part in the Elite College Combine on May 22 in Randolph, N.J., attend Florida's Elite Quarterback Camp in June and possibly be invited to the Manning Passing Academy in July at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, La.

Reed, whose brother David was an all-state receiver at New London and recently signed a national letter of intent to play at Utah after setting a national community college single-season record with 111 receptions at Pasadena City College, won't rush into any decisions, although he admits right now Boston College and UConn are the favorites.

“I want to go somewhere where my mom can come see me play,” he said. “But I also want to find a place where I can fit into their offense. My brother told me to visit every college I can, to look everywhere. He said there might be a college I didn't really think about and it might be the one for me.

“It's going to be fun. I've already seen some places. UConn was real nice — everything's brand new — but I don't want to rush into things.”

Added Cochran: “He can't go wrong with BC because Steve Logan is one of the most respected quarterback coaches in the country; he can't go wrong with UConn because it's the state school and has great facilities; and Florida is simply one of the best programs in college football.”

Has picked up a Duke offer. Iowa would lead if they offered.

From the Florida site. Boston College, Duke, East Carolina, Oregon, Penn State, Maryland, Iowa, Marshall, Tennessee and Florida have all offered. Distance is not a factor, and he plans to visit Florida, Tennesse, Penn State, and Oregon this summer.

From the Oregon site...talks about his interest in the Ducks, which despite having not visited yet is extremely high. Wants to play immediately and has offers from the likes of Duke, Boston College, Florida, TCU, Penn State, Syracuse, Tennessee and others. Three of his officials will be to Oregon, Florida and PSU.

TheDay.com - UConn Offers New London's Reed

Quote:
Whalers coach Jack Cochran confirmed Saturday that Edsall offered Reed, a 6-foot-4, 235-pound junior, a scholarship to play for the Huskies in 2009, the 10th school to offer the New London quarterback during the recruiting process.

Cochran said Reed made an unofficial visit to Storrs on Friday and had a chance to talk with Edsall. Edsall can't comment on potential recruits and Reed can not make an official visit to UConn or any other school until Sept. 1.

Cochran said Reed has also been offered scholarships by Boston College, Duke, East Carolina, Florida, Iowa, Marshall, Oregon, Penn State and Tennessee.

”Jordan was very excited,” Cochran said. “He had a good talk with coach Edsall and learned a lot about the program. Coach Edsall talked to him about where he would fit in, the importance of playing in state, and what benefits that has for you when you're done playing football.”
Quote:
Cochran said Reed hopes to make a college choice before his senior season begins.

Cochran said where Reed fits into the offense of each program, what is expected of him, his relationship with the head coach and quarterback coach, and other players who are currently on scholarship will all be determining factors.

But Cochran added that proximity to home will also play a major role in Reed's final choice.

”It would be great if he could play his college football close to home ... especially for his family,” Cochran said. “I think Jordan realizes that one advantage of playing in your home state is it opens up a lot of avenues outside of football.”

Cochran joked there's another thing on UConn's side, too: “Jordan's a mama's boy and wants to be close to her.”
