Plant tight end Orson Charles paid an unofficial visit to the University of Florida on Friday and picked up an official offer.
The Gators joined a growing list of Division I schools offering Charles a scholarship. The others include Florida State, USF and Auburn.
Charles visited the Florida campus, along with Panthers quarterback Aaron Murray, Murray’s parents, linebacker Hunter Baldwin and Coach Robert Weiner. The group sat in on football meetings, attended practice and toured the academic facilities.
They got an up close look at campus life when they attended a chemistry class with Tebow. The tour also included lunch and dinner with Gators coach Urban Meyer and Tebow.

UF Mystery Solved; Plant High Player Admits To Mishap
Quote:
Gator Nation, the mystery is solved. It was Plant High tight end Orson Charles who broke your 2006 BCS National Championship trophy Friday in Gainesville.
It was, of course, an accident. And Charles said he is genuinely sorry for knocking the handcrafted Waterford crystal off a coffee table and onto the ground, where, just outside of Coach Urban Meyer's office, it shattered.
While in Gainesville competing in a Nike training camp, Charles said he and another prep player were touring the football stadium. That's where the BCS trophy, along with Gators quarterback Tim Tebow's Heisman Trophy, were on display. While leaning over to take a photo of the Heisman, the 6-foot-3, 225-pound Charles said he bumped into the BCS trophy - he thinks with his backside - and knocked it to the ground.
"If you were outside the stadium, it was so loud, I think you would've heard it shatter," Charles said. "Nobody said anything for 10 minutes, then Florida assistant Coach John Hevesy said, 'What do I do? Who do I call? Did you know that was $35,000!'
"I just stood there with this baby look and said, 'Sorry.' Then he joked and said, 'You've got to commit to Florida now.'"
Charles, who will be a senior at Plant next season, has 16 Division I offers. He ranks Miami first on his list, but shortly after breaking the crystal he said Meyer joked about the mishap by asking, "How does it feel to be a Gator?" Charles said Meyer assured him insurance will replace the trophy.
Before Charles broke the trophy, Plant coach Robert Weiner said Meyer asked him to describe Charles. Weiner told Meyer that Charles was a "physical specimen" but sometimes a "bull in a china shop."
"After what happened," Weiner said, "I'm sure Urban now thinks I'm an excellent evaluator of talent."

From CaneSport...talks about the incident at Florida and says he is not focused on recruiting or narrowing things down at the moment. Says teammate Aaron Murray's choice (likely Georgia) will have no impact on him.

Quote:
“I’m going to LSU this weekend for a one day camp.” said Charles, “I like how LSU uses their tight ends (two tight end set). I like the tight ends coach (Lane). He came by my school this spring. I don’t expect to play early at LSU or any other school I have to earn a spot.”
“I like Nebraska coach Beck is recruiting me.” he said, “They want me to make it up to camp I’m not sure if I will. My coach and I will plan out where to go this summer.”
“I might go to Nebraska if they are in my top five. I don’t know when I will narrow it down. I want to take my time. I want to know how teams use their tight ends and I want to major in construction engineering.”
“I’ve been to Florida State once and I liked it.” said Charles, “I really liked the Florida State’s tight end coach (Coley). He coached the tight ends for the Miami Dolphins. Coach Coley can coach up his players.”
“I want to visit USC this summer.” he said, “I want to see the athletes there. I hope to get an offer from them. USC is everybody’s dream school, the big boys.”
“USC coaches said I’m fast for my size and can gain weight. Some schools are recruiting me as an H-Back. USC said I remind them of tight end Fred Davis that was taken in the second round.”
“Oklahoma didn’t offer me right away they saw all my Florida offers and thought they didn’t have a chance, but once Oklahoma knew I was wide open they started to recruit me.” said Charles
“Oklahoma coach Wilson said they are losing the top two junior tight ends next year and I have a chance to earn a spot. Coach Wilson said he will send me some academic stuff. I definitely like to visit them (Oklahoma) this summer. Oklahoma is always in contention.”
“I like Michigan I would like to make it to their camp.” said Charles, “Michigan sends a lot of players to the NFL. I definitely like to look into them, see what their (Michigan) staff is like.”

From the LSU Site. Orson says that the academic side of things is what impressed him the most about LSU on his visit this weekend. He is keeping a close eye on how teams use their TE's, and plans to take some visits. He is pretty sure LSU will be one.
