Top Junior Watches Tigers Practice

Junior ATH Stephon Gilmore (6-1 180) of South Pointe was at Clemson Saturday to watch the Tigers' bowl practice. Gilmore is regarded as one of the state's top juniors and already sports offers from Clemson, USC, NC State and Tennessee. He's also drawing early interest from Alabama and Florida. Playing quarterback this season Gilmore accounted for over 2100 yards and 24 touchdowns.

Offer List Growing For Gilmore

The offer list for ATH Stephon Gilmore (6-2 190) of South Pointe now stands at ten according to his coach Bobby Carroll. Gilmore has offers from USC, Clemson, Florida State, Florida, Alabama, LSU, NC State, Tennessee, Wisconsin and Penn State. Gilmore also plays basketball and hasn't been able to get to any junior days thus far though he's been invited to several. And according to Carroll, Gilmore does not yet have any favorites. Carroll said Gilmore should grow to about 210 pounds once he's in college. He plays quarterback and defensive back for South Pointe. "He can play anywhere," the coach said. "He's just a phenomenal athlete. He has a good nose for the game. He has great range. He can see the game. He has a knack for finding that open spot." Last season at quarterback Gilmore accounted for 2100 yards and 24 touchdowns. Carroll said schools also are checking RB Devin Wherry (6-0 220). "We've given him the fall over 400 times and he's fumbled one time," Carroll said. "He gains yardage after contact. He runs with his shoulders down, forward and low to the ground." Wherry could also play linebacker in college. USC has been showing strong interest according to Carroll, and Wherry also is drawing looks from Clemson, Florida State, Alabama and North Carolina.

USC and Clemson are locked up in a tight battle for South Pointe ATH Stephon Gilmore (6-2 190). "South Carolina and Clemson are recruiting me the hardest," Gilmore said. "I talked to Ellis Johnson (USC) two days ago. He wants me to come down there and come to their junior day. I talked to coach Napier (Clemson) a week ago. We were just talking. I've been keeping in touch with both schools." Both are recruiting Gilmore as a defensive back. He also has offers from Florida, Florida State, Alabama, LSU, NC State, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Penn State and Maryland. Gilmore visited Tennessee a couple of weeks ago for a junior day and that's been his only visit because track has taken up most of his weekends. Gilmore said he does not have a favorite.

South Pointe football coach Bobby Carroll needs a bigger mailbox and could use a few more telephones.
The phone on his desk and his cell phone, which plays the "Monday Night Football" theme when it rings, were in use at the same time on April 3.

Coaches from around the country have been calling as regular as the tide. They are asking about his junior class, a group of talented rising seniors being recruited by their respective schools.

None is getting more attention than Stephon Gilmore, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound quarterback heading into his senior season who's considered the No. 2 player in South Carolina by several scouting services.

It was hard to miss them. On top of one stack was a smoky plastic envelope that had Gilmore's and South Pointe's names on it. It was easy to see a large Michigan helmet on the letter, which is most likely why the Wolverines use a see-through envelope.

Others were scattered about the table -- Rutgers, Connecticut, Southern Cal, Miami and Illinois. Those schools are inquiring and have yet to make offers. The list of those who have is impressive -- Alabama, Clemson, Colorado, Florida, Florida State, LSU, Maryland, Michigan, N.C. State, Penn State, Tennessee, Virginia and South Carolina.

Fromt he Michigan site. Gilmore says the fact that Michigan has offered as a QB while everyone else likes him as an ATH makes the Wolverines very interesting. He says that playing QB won't be the only thing he looks at, as academics, playing time, and the coaches will all be big factors. He names no favorites.

ATH Stephon Gilmore (6-2 190) Monday won the 100 meters in his region track meet with a time of 10.9 seconds. Saturday, Gilmore was at USC watching the Gamecocks run around in their spring game. "Its the first time I got to see them go full contact," Gilmore said. "I talked to coach (Ellis) Johnson before the game. He talked about how I can come in and have an impact on the defense. I just got to talk to him and know him a little bit more. I also talked to coach Reaves. He's trying to get me to play on the offensive side." Gilmore was joined on the visit by his parents and younger sister. He didn't make it to Clemson's spring game, and he visited Tennessee two weeks ago. Rutgers is the newest offer for Gilmore. His others are USC, Clemson, Florida State, Florida, Alabama, LSU, NC State, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Penn State, Maryland, Michigan, Ohio State and Colorado. He plans to narrow his list this summer or by the start of the season. He does not have any favorites.
