First you have grades," Davenport said of his priorities, "and then you have the recruitment. But you have your eyes open as to who wants you and who doesn't."

Davenport is relying on Phoebus coach Bill Dee to handle the gaggle of schools inquiring about him and the handful that already have offered grants-in-aid. Virginia and, most recently, West Virginia have extended such offers, Davenport said, with invites expected soon from Virginia Tech, Florida State and Penn State.

(Expect West Virginia to recruit more aggressively in Virginia. New head coach Bill Stewart used to work at VMI, and he recently hired former Hampton University offensive coordinator Chris Beatty to coach the Mountaineers' running backs.)

Davenport said he has no early favorite, "but I guess you could say U.Va.'s shown me a lot of love."
