Maymon is one of the best high school basketball players to hit the Wisconsin hardwood in many years, IMO. I've said it before and I'll say it again, he's underrated as a college prospect too. He's a bit of a tweener at 6'6" and a 3/4, but no more than players like Tucker and Landry. He actually reminds me of a hybrid of those players. He can knife through defenses and has an uncanny knack of avoiding contact in small spaces or sliding off it. Also uncanny is his feel for where the hoop is relatively to his body within 12 feet. Alando had those two very similar traits which allowed him to play bigger than 6'5". He could do a lot with a little space. He's probably not the freakish athlete that Do was, but he's better at getting where he desires off the the bounce and not just the catch. Maymon's shooting is a bit
raw, but probably projects better than Tucker's did, and similar to Landry's. Like Landry, Maymon has a pretty fluid stroke. Actually, Maymon's is rather silky as only lefties can do. I'd estimate he hit about 4-5 jumpers in last night's state championship game, more if you count mid range runners. A few he missed rather badly, but his confidence wasn't eroded. His 33 point, 17 rebound defense was rather remarkable considering Tosa East employed a zone primarily to stop Maymon and he received absolutely no help from his teammates. Nobody could hit an outside jump shot to take pressure off him inside. So he had to step outside and make things happen from time to time, which he did with decent success. When he received the ball inside, he was practically automatic. And he had a nose for the ball. The announcer referred to him seemingly having a magnet attached to his body and I thought that was appropriate. In addition to not getting any help from his teammates, he would have performed better if he got an ounce of rest. They played him the full 36 minutes and Maymon gassed out at the end of the ballgame somewhat. One improvement he needs to make on the defense end. He's over-aggressive and that got his team in trouble a few times resulting in uncontested baskets for Tosa East on the break. What he did show was great lateral footwork for an
interior player which is a projectability to the wing on the next level. He came up with some monster blocks on defense, but could have accumulated more, if his timing was better. However, as I said, he's one of the best players in Wisconsin in years.
Here's a video of Maymon (#8 on black) from AAU this past summer where he looks leaner, exhibits an excellent handle, and also his silky-smooth touch.
