Here's a look ahead at Jack Britt High; Class of 2011 tight end/offensive line prospect Eric Maclain is one to keep an eye on. The 6-foot-5, 270-pounder already holds a verbal scholarship offer (schools can't offer in writing until Sept. 1 of a prospect's junior year) from Tennessee and is getting attention from a number of other programs. Maclain likely projects as an offensive lineman in college because of his size.

Jack Britt High School’s sophomore tight end Eric MacLain has made an oral commitment to the University of Tennessee, even though he can’t sign with the Volunteers until February 2011.

MacLain’s father, Michael, confirmed the commitment to the Knoxville Sentinel on Wednesday. Jack Britt coach Richard Bailey was not aware when reached Wednesday afternoon that the commitment had been made, although he did say that Tennessee assistant coach Dan Brooks was scheduled to visit the school Thursday to talk to MacLain.

“I don’t think (the commitment is) 100 percent official yet. I’m not sure (Tennessee) could take the commitment yet,” Bailey said. “I think (MacLain) is going to (commit). I do think it’s going to happen.”

MacLain, 15, is a 6-foot-5, 275-pounder who played on the Jack Britt varsity as a freshman when he was the starting punter. He’s been the team’s starter at tight end this season.

Tennessee offered a scholarship during the summer after watching MacLain perform at their football camp. He’s been a lifelong Volunteer fan, according to Bailey.
