Film:
My Take: Fundamentally sound with a solid understanding of space and angles. His ball skills are excellent and he shows a willingness to bring the run support.

DB Devonte Holloman (6-3 205) of Charlotte already has a long list of offers including Clemson, USC, Notre Dame, Auburn, North Carolina, Tennessee, Florida, Illinois and NC State. Holloman has been to Clemson for games and to North Carolina for a basketball game. He's been to Georgia for a camp and plans to go either to Georgia or North Carolina this weekend for a junior day. He also plans to get to Clemson and NC State for junior day. "I'm not picking any favorites," Holloman said. "I just want to see everybody and then me and my parents will cut the list to five." Holloman plays strong safety and had 50 tackles and 2 interceptions last season when he also played quarterback. "I cover a lot of space as a safety," he said. "Coaches say I've very smart and use my intelligence to make smart plays." As a sophomore, when he played just safety, Holloman totaled 98 tackles with 4 interceceptions.

Two of Clemson's top targets, DB Devonte Holloman (6-3 205) of Charlotte and ATH Stephon Gilmore (6-2 190) of South Pointe, will make unofficial visits to Clemson Monday with their parents to watch practice. "We're going to get there around 10:30," Holloman said. "I want to see coach Bowden's style of practice. I want to see more of the kind of system they run, the technique and the style of play." Holloman has Clemson among his early favorites but said there was no possibility of a commitment Monday. Also among his current favorites are LSU, Oklahoma, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Michigan and Georgia. Georgia has not officially offered. Holloman was supposed to go to North Carolina Saturday but their spring game was rained out. He has a basketball commitment this coming weekend, and he plans to visit Notre Dame and Michigan the following weekend. Holloman also has offers from Auburn, USC, Tennessee, Florida, Illinois, NC State and Texas A&M. Gilmore took in a practice at USC last week. He also has offers from Florida State, Florida, Alabama, LSU, NC State, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Penn State and Maryland.

Clemson added another highly regarded safety to its 2009 class with a commitment Monday night from DB Devonte Holloman (6-3 210) of Charlotte. Earlier Monday afternoon, Holloman had said Clemson and Michigan had separated themselves from the pack. Later in the evening, after talking it over with his parents, Holloman decided it was time to commit to Clemson. "It just fits me as a person," Holloman said. "It's close to home. The academics are good for engineering. There's a chance for me to play early. I know a couple of guys who have already committed and going in with friends is good, too. I'm going to stay at safety. He (Vic Koenning) likes to roll the safety up and I like to be up and hit, and sometimes I like to be at free (safety). The defense already has some building blocks and hopefully I can be another piece of a championship defense." Holloman is the second highly touted safety to commit to Clemson joining Craig Loston of Texas. Holloman likes the idea of the two roaming in the secondary together. "I think that will be scary for a lot of teams." Holloman also is a very close friend of South Pointe ATH Stephon Gilmore, and his commitment could lead Gilmore to the Tigers, though he's been saying he's open between Clemson and USC. Holloman said his decision is firm and he'll not visit any other schools. He is on track to graduate in December. He is the 8th commitment for Clemson's 2009 class.

ESPN - Top-flight '09 safeties a versatile bunch - Football Recruiting
Quote:
Meanwhile, there is no one better at playing the deep ball than DeVonte Holloman (Rock Hill, S.C./South Pointe). He has amazing athletic ability for a safety who weighs more than 210 pounds. He has a great break on the ball when playing downfield and times the interception perfectly.
Holloman is so effective as a pass-defender in part because he has been a quarterback. His experience at that position helps him understand coverages and read route progressions. At the same time, don't think that this productive football player can't stop the run. Holloman attacks the sweep and sprint-out with speed and a sense of urgency.

newsobserver.com | Clemson football recruit wants to look at UNC
Quote:
Clemson recruit DeVonte Holloman, considered to be one of the top high school safeties in the country, has decommitted and says he wants to look at North Carolina.
Holloman, a 6-3, 215-pound senior, transferred from Charlotte Independence to Rock Hill (S.C.) South Pointe at the beginning of the season. He said he "was surprised but not surprised" when he heard about Clemson head coach Tommy Bowden being fired Monday morning.
"I wasn't expecting it at the beginning of the season," Holloman said. "Maybe at the end, but it's not a situation I want to go into -- with a whole new head coach and all the changes that will probably happen."
Holloman took an unofficial visit to Tennessee last month and plans to take official visits to South Carolina this week and LSU Oct. 25. He said he also wanted to visit North Carolina and was in the process of contacting the Tar Heels coaches who initially recruited him.
Holloman, a 4.0 student, said he still plans to graduate in December and enroll in his new school in January. He said that new school would come from one of the campuses he visits.
"I'm wide open again," Holloman said of his recruiting prospects.
