Northwest football's Klatt feels Michigan State is right for him
Wednesday, July 9, 2008
GATEHOUSE OHIO GROUPMultimedia
CANAL FULTON Nate Klatt said earlier this summer that he wanted to get his college choice out of the way before high school football teams began fall practice.
The standout Northwest offensive lineman did just that Monday when he let Michigan State Coach Mark Dantonio know that he was verbally committing to play college football for the Spartans in 2009.
Now Klatt can breathe easier, at least until the Indians begin fall practice later this month.
"I talked to my recruiting coach on Sunday to let him know that I was committing there, but Coach Dantonio was in Italy. I wasn't able to get in touch with him until Monday, when I told him I was committing.
"I was ready to make a decision and be done with it. I wanted to focus on my senior year and the things I want to accomplish. It was starting to become a hassle and I was starting to stress out about it. Now I can sort of sit back, relax and know that I've made a good decision."
Klatt, a 6-foot-4, 300-pound center, was one of the highest-rated players at his position. He completed a tour of several Midwest colleges in mid-June that ultimately helped him narrow his list to Michigan State, Kansas and Northwestern. In the end, Klatt went where he felt the most comfortable.
"My first visit to their campus was June 21, and it was a great campus," Klatt said. "I thought it was a place where I could fit in, and it did feel like home. Kansas and Northwestern also were in the running, and I truly liked all the schools that were looking at me.
"I liked the fact that it's not a city atmosphere, it's like a true college campus."

Ohio lineman commits to MSU
Highly ranked center Klatt picks Spartans for class of 2009
Andrew Mouranie
For the Lansing State Journal
EAST LANSING - Mark Dantonio and the Michigan State football team received their 10th verbal commitment to the class of 2009 on Monday from Canal Fulton (Ohio) Northwest offensive lineman Nate Klatt.
The 6-foot-5, 290-pounder chose MSU over Kansas.
Indiana, Purdue and a variety of MAC schools also offered him.
"Nate really liked Kansas, but the chance to play in the Big Ten was too good to pass up," Northwest coach Victor Whiting said. " Once he went to Michigan State, he was convinced. Once he saw the facilities and what they had to offer, he decided that's where he wanted to go."
