Winning the Georgia 5A Player of the Year was a nice accomplishment for Martin Luther King High School's Joel Kight but he's looking to attain a much bigger goal in the future.

M.L. King coach Corey Jarvis believes a scholarship offer will be forthcoming from Georgia Tech for his talented senior linebacker, Joel Kight.

Kight will take official visits to Oklahoma State this weekend and Georgia Tech on Dec. 19.

“They are really leaning toward offering him,” Jarvis said Monday evening. “When he goes [to Tech] next weekend, I think they will offer. That’s based on me talking to [Tech assistant] coaches [Brian] Jean-Mary and [Brian] Bohannon.”

Ironically, Jarvis thinks Kight’s ability to play on either side of the ball has contributed to a delay in an offer from the Jackets.

“I think the biggest drawback is that Joel can play linebacker or running back on that level,” Jarvis said. “And they’ve been trying to decide. I think he’ll probably end up being a running back for them.”

If Tech offers, they will join Boston College, Oklahoma State and Ole Miss are his favorites.

Kight was scheduled to host four different in-home visits on Monday. Coaches from Boston College, Oklahoma State, Tech and UAB were expected to stop by for visits throughout the afternoon and early evening.

The recruitment of M.L. King running back/defensive back Joel Kight took an unexpected turn on Tuesday when he eliminated Georgia Tech from consideration after picking up a scholarship offer from Auburn.

“[Auburn] coach [Gene] Chizik called today with the offer,” M.L. King coach Corey Jarvis told the AJC. “It really didn’t shock me because I had heard some speculation last week. But I didn’t want to say anything until it became official.”

Kight met with Tech linebackers coach Brian Jean-Mary on Tuesday. Jarvis disputed the persistent chatter that the Jackets’ offer to Kight had expired.

“Georgia Tech didn’t pull the offer,” Jarvis said. “In fact, coach B.J. came to the school [on Tuesday] and Joel told him that, with Auburn offering, he’s cutting it down to Auburn, Oklahoma State and Ole Miss.

“Joel is scheduled to visit Auburn this weekend.”

Jarvis said Kight’s desire to play defense in college contributed to his decision to eliminate Tech from consideration.

“I think it was more of the idea of him playing running back [at Tech],” Jarvis said. “Auburn is interested in him at linebacker, or possibly safety.

“And I think he didn’t want to stay in Atlanta. I think he wants to be close to home, but just not that close.”'

Three finalists for outside linebacker Joel Kight
Mississippi, Auburn and Oklahoma State are the finalists for Joel Kight after he eliminated Georgia Tech, ESPN affiliate Web site InsideTheGrove.com reports.

"I'm going to go over and see Auburn, and then come back, take some time and make my decision," Kight said. "It is all about getting along with coaches and players and playing early. I don't want to go somewhere and sit on the bench until my junior year."

"Ole Miss and Oklahoma State haven't pressured me at all," Kight said. "I can take my visit, analyze things and go from there."

Following some weekend drama, M.L. King running back/defensive back Joel Kight committed to Ole Miss around 7 p.m. on Sunday.

“He actually committed to Ole Miss on Friday and then de-committed later in the day,” M.L. King coach Corey Jarvis said Sunday evening. “They told him to think about it over the weekend.

“But he just called them and said he’s coming to Ole Miss.”

Jarvis said the Rebels intend to play the 5-foot-9, 205-pound Kight on defense.

“I think it will be a good fit for him,” Jarvis said. “They’ll use him the way he should be used, which is at outside linebacker or strong safety.

“He’ll have a successful career there. That’s the kind of kid he is.”

Kight chose Ole Miss over Auburn and Oklahoma State.

He was recruited heavily by Georgia Tech in late December and early January.
