Wells Makes Visit To See Buckeyes

DE Keith Wells (6-5 220) of Gainesville, GA committed to Florida State in August but he is going to take the full allotment of official visits. He started this weekend by visiting Ohio State. "It went good," he said. "It was a really nice school. It was bigger than what I expected it to be. The facilities and the coaches were top notch. I'm still verbally committed to Florida State but I'll take four or all five of my visits. After I take all of my visits, then whichever school I feel more comfortable with I'll probably commit to the following week. I'm just making 100% sure Florida State is the school I want to be at. I'm just weighing my options and choosing from the best. If I don't feel like Florida State is the best school and the best place, then I don't want to be there." Clemson has kind of eased back in. Coach (Ron) West has been in to see me a couple of times at school and at home." Wells said he will visit Auburn this weekend, Florida State January 11th, Tennessee January 18th and Clemson January 25th. He's expecting coaches from Ohio State and Auburn to visit this week.

Wells Checks Out Auburn

LB Keith Wells (6-5 220) of Gainesville, GA made his official visit to Auburn over the weekend and liked a lot of what he saw. "It was pretty good," Wells said. "It was better than I expected it to be. Their practice was real exciting and intense. It was good watching the coaches coach the players and I got to hang out with some of the players." Wells also has visited Ohio State. He remains committed to Florida State and will visit there January 11th. And he's planning to visit Tennessee January 18th and Clemson January 25th.

Despite committing to Florida State in August, Gainesville defensive end Keith Wells said Thursday night he?s back in evaluation mode.

?I?m still verbally committed to Florida State, but at the same time I?m still taking visits to make sure Florida State is where I want to be,? Wells said.

?I?ve visited Ohio State and Auburn. I?ll visit Florida State in January, and possibly Tennessee and Notre Dame.?

The Fighting Irish haven?t yet extended a scholarship offer. But Wells believes he is only a visit away from receiving one from coach Charlie Weis? staff.

?Notre Dame hasn?t offered, but [assistant] coach [Bill] Lewis wants to see some film of my season this year,? he said. ?Hopefully, if my film is impressive they will offer.

?They may offer; they may not offer. I just want to get up there on my visit.?

Wells said he?s trying to keep an open mind when it comes to the academic scandal that rocked Tallahassee earlier this week.

?I think about it,? Wells admitted. ?But it really doesn?t effect how I feel about Florida State because that?s only 20 or so individuals who decided to make that decision.

?I don?t think a school should be judged by a group of individuals who made a bad decision. But it does have me thinking ?what is going on inside Florida State with what the recruits can?t see or the parents can?t see.??

Wells, who says he will take five official visits prior to national signing day, said he gets mixed signals from his recruiting coach at FSU, Jody Allen, when they discuss him taking visits to other schools.

?I spoke to coach Allen after I visited Ohio State, and I don?t think they were too nervous then,? Wells said. ?But I know before I took my visit to Ohio State he didn?t want me to go on any trip. I guess he was nervous then.

Gainesville defensive end Keith Wells appeared a lock to sign with Florida State in February following a commitment announcement at his school last summer.

But the 6-foot-5, 270-pound Wells now appears determined to spend the next four weeks testing the waters around the ACC and SEC.

“Right now, I’d say I will visit Tennessee, Miami and FSU,” Wells said. “And if anyone falls through, I’ve got schools like Clemson, Notre Dame and Alabama.

“I’m still not exactly sure which remaining three visits I’ll take. More than likely it will be FSU. If not this weekend, it’ll be my last visit. I’ll probably go to Tennessee next weekend and Miami on Jan. 25.”

Florida State’s prospects of regaining ground with Wells might be as simple as picking up a telephone.

“They’re not communicating with me a lot,” Wells said. “I guess they’re just wanting to see what I’m going to do. Me and the guy who was recruiting me at FSU just haven’t communicated like we used to.

“I don’t like that. It shows that they’re not concerned, as far as recruiting me and getting me to come there.”

If Wells withdraws his commitment to the Seminoles, he admitted that winding up at Notre Dame might be a long shot.

“Notre Dame still hasn’t offered,” he said. “I guess they want to get me there on an official and evaluate me and my game film.

“But I won’t seriously consider going up there unless they offer me a scholarship.”
