Montini's Goebel sets tone for senior season at Ironman
By Gary Larsen | Daily Herald 12/14/2007
Those Illinois heavyweights dreaming of winning a state title this year have one dreadful nightmare to get through first.
Defending state champion and senior Garrett Goebel of Montini may be hanging up his singlet in favor of an Ohio State football uniform next year, but he showed at last weekend's 59-team Ironman Tournament that he intends to leave a big footprint behind.
"I'll miss the meets," Goebel said of his departure from the sport. "But I probably won't miss the practices."
Montini and Glenbard North competed last weekend at the annual Ohio Ironman Tournament, held at Walsh Jesuit high school in Cuyahoga Falls. The Broncos finished ninth and the Panthers placed 17th in what many consider the toughest national tournament in the country.
Top-seeded Goebel won his second consecutive Ironman title at heavyweight after placing second at 215 as a sophomore. He posted a pair of pins before winning a 4-0 semifinal decision over fourth-seeded Nick Cook of Virginia's Fauquier High School, setting up a title match against seventh-seeded James Meder of Ohio's Parma Valley Forge High School.
"I didn't pay any attention to the seeds. Whoever you wrestle is tough," Goebel said. "Most of the guys I wrestled wanted to keep the score close, and they wrestled smart matches."
The match went into overtime tied 1-1 before Goebel threw Meder for the only takedown of a 3-1 decision. Last year Goebel used three pins to reach the final before winning it by 7-0 decision.
In two years of Ironman competition, no wrestler scored an offensive point on Goebel.
"He just has a relentless attitude, and I'm very proud of him for fighting off some rust after football but still winning that title," said Montini coach Mike Bukovsky.

WRESTLING: National acclaim at stake in Dvorak
December 21, 2007
BY SETH SCHWARTZ
The 33rd Dvorak Tournament is a chance for wrestling fans and competitors to get a midseason evaluation of which teams and individuals are at the top of their games.
Quote:
Montini's Garrett Goebel (15-0, 13 pins), ranked No. 3 by Amateur Wrestling News, might be the nation's premier heavyweight. It's hard to gauge how he would stack up vs. the top five in his class who have earned college scholarships. Goebel will play football at Ohio State.
Goebel's father, Greg, the Broncos' defensive line and heavyweight coach, understood that the skills learned on the mat transfer effectively to the gridiron. He got his son wrestling at age 8.
''When Garrett said he wanted to go out for football [in junior high],'' Greg Goebel said, ''I said, 'You'll go out when you get to high school. I'll teach you everything you need to know about blocking and tackling the night before practice.'''
There's a good reason Goebel has dominated since he was a freshman 215-pounder. At Martinez Elite Kids Program, he absorbed Jose Martinez's lessons and developed an adroit, offensive style. Goebel went 55-1 last season with 34 pins en route to a state title.
''You just don't find a guy with Garrett's size [6-5, 275], speed, strength and skill,'' Montini assistant coach John Dziewiatkowski said. ''He doesn't wrestle like a heavyweight. He moves like a 171-pounder.''

"We know it's a really tough tournament," said the Broncos' defending state and Dvorak heavyweight champ, Garrett Goebel. "We're a younger team, but we've got a lot more depth. I think we're just as good as last year's team. We've just got to have a lot of younger guys step up."

Heavyweight title
In a battle of two top-ranked heavyweights, Eric Thompson of Waverly-Shell Rock won a 6-3 decision over Montini Catholic's Garrett Goebel.
Thompson, who will wrestle at Iowa State next season, scored a first-period takedown after a failed foot-sweep attempt by Goebel.
Goebel, who will play football at Ohio State next season, escaped and the two big men postured for the remainder of the first period. Goebel started in the down position to start the second, and he needed only eight seconds to escape.
Later in the period, Thompson secured a double-leg takedown and was able to ride out Goebel for the remainder of the second.
Thompson earned his third takedown in the third, and Goebel never seriously threatened. After the match ended, Thompson threw his arms in the air and received a standing ovation from the Waverly-Shell Rock fans.
Goebel entered the match ranked No. 1 by Intermat, while Thompson was ranked No. 1 by Amateur Wrestling News.
